i have 2 ps3's one that i play with online and is updated with newest firmware and one has 3.15 with linux still installed. I never upgraded past that. my question is can i use that download manager on linux? or do i need to have that dongle(jailbreak) for it to work?
I think its psfreedom that has one that works on 3.15, so you can keep linux and use the jailbreak, but i dont think you will be able to play games that require fw above 3.15
well i got 3.41 update saved i could upgrade to 3.41. but id like to keep linux installed. i dont got a cell phone or anything to do the exploit with thought. is there any other way?
There's a couple of things you can do...but you'll need the following:
Some way to jailbreak - You can get some kind of atmel programming board (I have 2 - an AT90USB162 and an ATMEGA32u2 [ebay], but there's tons out there and most of them do the trick), or a USB jailbreak dongle that allows you to flash custom HEX files.
The Right Hex file - There's a number of hex files out there, and some do things that others don't, like work on 3.15. The one you're looking for is KaKaRoTo's PL3 hex that works on 3.15. If you get an atmel programming board, you can go to www.project0.de/psgroove-maker. This website will create a hex file for your specific board/firmware combo.
A backup manager - Again, there's a few out there, but the best one to work with PL3 is Gaia Manager, currently on version 1.13.1.
Also, there's now a way to boot Linux on 3.41. A homebrew dev named Marcan has created a bootloader he calls asbestOS...but I think it's for slims only, and because you have Linux now, you have a Fat PS3, so forget that last bit.
