I've been scouring the net for an answer to this, and I haven't found anything satisfactory. (But I haven't had need to search in a while, so maybe my skills have deteriorated. Let me know.)
What I'm trying to do is not install Linux, but simply run a Live CD in order to use the PS3 as a DVD ripper.
I understand SAK does the job very well when ripping BDs. I've actually used it already to back up a movie of mine; I'm tinkering around with Blu-Ray to see how ripping video from it is different from or similar to DVD. To this end, I'm ripping the same movie (in standard-def DVD form). SAK, though, can't rip DVDs. (This is probably because of the different copy protection or some junk.)
So I figured I could probably use a Linux Live CD to rip the DVD to my hard drive. The problem, of course, comes when installing any Linux of any kind at all on the PS3.
From what I've gathered, you need both the "otheros.self" bootloader installer and the "otheros.bld" bootloader. Put them onto a flash drive, yadda yadda, PS3-->System Settings-->Install Other OS.
What I'm trying to wrap my brain around is whether or not you even need to format the hard drive at all. If you have a Live CD, could you just install the bootloader to the flash memory and then insert the Live CD and boot that up? Or would installing it automatically entail formatting the hard drive?
I know SAK doesn't require you to format the hard drive, but from what I can see, the only reason for this is that the bootloader is small enough to fit onto the flash memory. If there's some sort of technical lingo that needs to be explained to me, feel free to explain it.
Anyway, if the bootloader can be saved onto the PS3's flash, can I then simply run the Live CD?
...or should I ignore all of this and just use my computer to do the ripping? (Which I would, but I just installed a clean drive and will be installing a new OS tomorrow that could probably do the job.)
If you managed to read all of that, thanks. If not, thanks anyway. And any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I wasnt sure Live CD's would work, but if you want Linux on your PS3, without formatting your PS3's HDD, instal Linux on an External HDD, that way, you would have your disc drive free and not have to touch the PS3's HDD, also with Linux installed, you could use an External DVD drive to rip your DVD's and not have to worry about destroying the Blu Ray drive.
Oh, duh. Installing to an external drive had completely skipped my mind for some reason. Well, that makes things much simpler. (And this thread has been rendered moot anyway since I just got XP and Ubuntu onto that unused PC I mentioned above. Oh well. New thing learned.)
