Hi guys a few months ago i thought I'd buy a faulty ps3 for cheap off line, since i have managed to fix other console's thought I'd have a crack at it. It had the YLOD which i managed to fix, which lasted about 2 days then it encountered another problem, no video, no sound just a green light, i couldn't even get to the recovery menu, i found a few things that could be, but none of the fixes worked. So today i got a bit bored and thought i'd have another go at it. I managed to get the video and sound back by heating the GPU up with a heatgun and pushing down on the chip at the same (heating for about 20 seconds) This managed to get the video back, so if anyone else is having problems this could be one thing to try, i think maybe the connection with the GPU and motherboard wasn't so good.
But now after about a minute it keeps turning itself off (with red flashing light) and i go to re-start it and get no video again. I thought at first i might just need some more thermal paste on the chips so i done that. But it hasn't made a difference, So i was hoping someone might know how to fix that problem ??? and hopefully when i get this problem sorted i should have a working PS3 and i hope someone else might be able to fix there no video problem via the same method.
Let me know if you guys can think of anything about the dam thing turning itself off.
Oh i forgot to say when i do actually get it too boot up (get to menu, and was trying to put my network settings in) it locks up before turning itself off, so I'm think could the ram/memory be a possibly ?
make sure the cover on the RSX chip is secure...it comes loose easy on the 20/60gb model, especialy if you use a heatgun near it.
Also, use high quality thermal compound...sony uses something similar to arctic silver 5, so arctic silver 5 should be the minimum for repairs. Always remember that arctic silver 5 must be applied in a thin, even layer...idealy thinner than a sheet of printer paper.
I'll crack it open again later and make sure the it's secure, Yeah that's all i use is arctic sliver. Do you think too much paste could cause it to lock up and shut down ? because there's a layer of paste on the chips and some on the fan heat sinks from where i had another motherboard in there (which has ylod but re flowed failed) Also there might be too much pressure on the GPU since when i was trying to fix the no video before a fix was applying more pressure to the gpu (and the heatsink well the thin metal plate on the fan had come off so i put a few layers of thermal adhesive tape on there to stick it back to the fan) Do you think any of these could cause it ?
hey i got this same problem. i got a ps3 with yellow light i fixed it with the heatgun and thermal paste and it worked my lil bro played it for like 1 hour and he turned it off and then i went to try to play it and had no video or sound . it ejects cd's and u can put cd's inside but nothing and non of my controllers connect to it with the usb or wireless . i try to boot it but nothing it doesnt boot ,i can do the fan thing to cool it down but still nothing.. help me . should i do the heat gun thing agine and do i press on the GPU CPU?
Oh and by the way, I'm no expert but I'd imagine that pressing on the GPU or CPU while it's heated would be a bad idea. The entire idea behind reflowing the BGA's on the GPU and CPU (that's what you're doing with the heatgun) is to fix bad solder connections.
If the solder is heated to the point where pushing down could have any effect at all (to the point where it's liquid and/or malleable) and you move the chip or the board in any way, there's a HUGE chance that you're creating more bad solder connections than you're fixing.
It sounds to me like the biggest problem that people are having when trying to reflow these is that they haven't tried refluxing them as well. Look it up on youtube if you don't know what i'm talking about.
gemyou, if refluxing and reflowing doesn't work, could you tell me if you're having trouble with your power supply overheating?
I've got one that the power supply overheats to the point where you can't touch it after about 10 minutes of the XMB. I put a known good power supply in and it did the same thing, so the problem is not the power supply. Can't figure it out.
