Hello all! I'm new to Afterdawn but not to the modding world. I know there is not a CFW for the 4.1 OFW on the PS3, but I'm wondering if there is a downgrade or any possible way to go back to pre 3.55. I can remove the HDD from the PS3 and connect it to my PC if I need to. If I need to pull all of my save info off on the drive and reinstall the OS to make it happen, so be it. Help me Afterdawn Gods!
No, as part of the firmware is also flashed onto a chip on the PS3.
You NEED a dongle or other device which can downgrade your PS3 there is no other way.
If you format your hdd and just put it back in the PS3, as the firmware is also on the PS3 chip you can only install what was last on it or a newer firmware, not an older one.
Only pre-3.55 games work on cfw, there are some patched for some newer games, and atm only the true blue dongle lets you play the latest games. However you cannot downgrade using the true blue dongle, they havent released anything to do that.
You could get the e3 flasher, this will downgrade your console, but as it now also supports dual boot they is no point in downgrading, instead leave the ps3 at ofw and install cfw on the extra flash chip instead.
e3 flasher does not suuport 3.6x games like true blue does.
Unfortunately the PS3 scene is all but dead, if you want to play backups of the latest games you will need to buy the lates dongle, which is true blue for like $60. This has completely ruined the scene and there is nothing to stop the dongle makers from releasing a new dongle and stop supporting the old one, thereby making everyone buy the new dongle at full price again.
Now some pirates are more than willing to pay for the dongles, they only need to spend $60 once and they can download $100s worth of games. For others who truely want to backup their legally bought games, it's an extra cost which they dont think they should be paying as most of the work that has been put into the dongles has been done by other hackers who released for free.
So now hackers arent even touching the PS3, there hasnt been any real progress in over a year (not counting true blue).
If you have the money and want to spend it on dongles, I recommend getting both the true blue and the e3 flasher.
This will allow dual booting, so you still go onto the psn with ofw; and then you can install the true blue firmware onto the e3flaher's spare chip in order to play 3.6x backup games.
Note however you will not be able to go online with pirates games, you'll still have to buy them and play them on ofw.
SO if you do this remember you wont have to downgrade your console, just install the cfw on the dual boot chip instead.
Oh and the cheapest would be buying one of the older dongles, e.g. PS3Yes Pro, which supports downgrading, but these disabled the bluray drives, but there is a fix but it's so old I cant remember where it is :P
Here's a thought, is it possible to download say, firmware 3.55 onto a fresh HDD? Like hooking it up as an external to a PC and loading it with it, then turning off auto update. Just brainstorming :)

Yep, the scene is pretty much gone, it probably would be faster is we learnt the several programming languages required etc and try to hack it ourselves :P
