Hi, thinking about getting a PS3 Slim but read that they can get really hot, I think some one said his blu ray disk were getting so hot they would eventually warp.
I like the slim as it's meant to be quieter, which is good as I would like to use i as a media player as well as playing blu ray, games etc, what would you recommend, fat or slim, thanks.

Some of the fats got HOT, others (like my 40GB) run cool and quiet. The slims do run hotter than my fat, but cooler than the early fats. The hard disk placement on the slim means that using a 7200RPM drive would probably cause heat issues...that's the only way I can see it getting hot enough to warp disks.

The discs won't get warped from the heat that any model PS3 makes. If it was going to warp than you would need much more than that and it would probably melt at that point which means you have a bigger problem like a fire not heat from a PS3.

If he had specified BluRay disks, I would agree...but I have found some cheap CDR media that warps far before it melts.

The slim doesn't get as hot as the original 60gb PS3 backward compatible, they do get hot, and I haven't used mine for a while, not when temps have been from 34 degrees celcius early morning up to 44/45 degrees Celsius at 2 to 3 p.m. It just kept getting hot, and nothing got cool, even the refrigerator struggled, and it is 18 months old.

My dad has one...I ripped a few CDs to MP3 for him; by the time I finished the third one, the disk was almost too hot to handle...all without doing anything in 3D.

i have a 160 GB fat 09' that use to run cool ( or maybe i didn't play it alot) but recently its gotten much hotter with about the same amount of gamelay 1- 2 hours i have it standing upright not flat and i notice the bottom ( which would be on the right side) gets increasingly hot in the same time-frame so it worries me that its deteriorating? the fans aren't doing as good of a job as before? Any one else notice something similar on their PS3? I just bought some new games and a YLOD would be like a kick to the balls.... well not literally. Maybe i should get a slim how much better are they than the older models?

From what I've read on various sites and googles opinion is still divided, we all expect any electronics equipment to get warm or hot depending on what it is, games consoles are expected to get hot. I guess it's a case of have they designed the consoles cooling system well enough to keep it with-in a certain exceptable temperature range.
As you might have noticed I started this thread with the same question, my concern was with how hot the disk got, particularly blu ray disks, as I read some where they were getting very hot. As a games machine I'm sure it's perfectly ok, I had a chance to try a slim that had been in use for many hours, it didn't seem that hot and the fans were very quiet, I didn't touch the bottom or get a chance to check the disk temp though.
So I thought it would make an ideal media machine, but then I read the reply above about a cd that had been ripped and it was almost to hot to handle when ejected, I need to reseach a bit more on disk temps how ever. Saying that everybody I've talked to who owns one say there very quiet with no problems.

Forgot to mention, as a PC builder all fans have a life expectantcy and need replacing depending on there use, in a normal PC the fans would normally last the life of the computer, cpu fans may differ.
Is it possile to replace the fans on your old PS3?

That still must be a rare occurance though. After about 3 months now with my 3rd PS3 (a 120gb Slim) in my collection I have to say it does get quite "warm" but nothing more than my 80gb BC PS3. Every disc I have thrown at it comes out warm to the touch but nothing of major concern and everything has worked flawlessly as usual!

I recommend the PS3 slim instead of the Fat one. It doesn't run as hot as the fat models (any type), it is a lot quieter, and (as far as I can tell on any media CD-R, DVD-R, etc.) it doesn't warp any discs. I've played my slim for about 1 - 2 days straight and have had no issues. I don't recommend though, running your ps3 for that long of time. Play for a couple of hours and allow it to cool down every now and then just to avoid problems in the long run. That's my opinion.

...you actually played your PS3 for two days straight. A straight 24-48 hours?
How'd you find the time?
