Hi
Got a PS3 Slim on 5th Sep. it connected to my Samsung LE40R87 LCD TV via a HDMI cable. However randomly wether playing games, in XMB, or watching Blu Ray, sometimes, the screen goes black, see "snow" and then returns to normal picture.
I thought it was my Slim, so returned it to GameStation today and got a new one. However after setting up, I havent even played a game and its just done it again when on the XMB.
Anyone help with what it could be please. As I say I thought it was Slim, but as just done it on another brand new one I'm thinking not now
I tried 2 cables, different HDMi ports on my TV but same. It doesnt do it all the time, just the odd time, for a second long, very annoying.
Anyone please help
cheers

What kind of HDMI cables are you using? Have you checked to see if your ports (both in your PS3 and your HDTV) are clean? Have you checked your CABLES to see if they're clean?

Check the PS3 Video out 480/720/1080i/1080p setting. Select only the one that you have. You may have already done this. The PS3 will try to make adjustments according to what it thinks is best if allowed to.

Hi,
I got the same problem as you described. I previuosly had a PS3 40GB version which I had no problem with. Since I got the PS3 slim sometimes the screen goes black for 2-3 seconds randomly, and I got this only during video playback. I have checked the HDMI cable, nothing is wrong with it.
I'm just wondering if could fix the problem at your end?

Well I took my Slim back to the shop and got a brand new one, and its the same.
My TV does 720P and 1080i (not 1080P full HD), so what should I set it to? 720P only? If I let the PS3 auto detect it selects 720P and 1080i.
I know all HDMI cables are supposed to be the same, but I'm thinking of getting a better one for about a tenner from Game ro Gamestation, what do you think?
I also phoned Sony PS3 support, they had surprise never heard of problem, change that, do this, swap that, everything I already have done.
I'm stuck what do to. I have to try it on another TV 1st at SOny suggestion, so I have another HD 23" LCD which I will try when i get chance.
Anything else I can do? anymore help please?
cheers

I would try setting it to 720p only and see it the problem goes away. This would at least let you know if it was an auto detect problem between the 720 and 1080i. And as you said, trying another HDMI cable would be a good idea. $10 to $15 will get you a good HDMI cable at walmart.

I had a very similar problem until I purchased a new HDMI cable from monoprice for less than $5.00.
Ever since, I no longer lose video. Have you tried it with av cables?

No Wal-Mart! That sucks. It's the redneck BestBuy. Off subject, doesn't walmart have their fingers in a chain overthere?

Ive ordered a new 1.3 cable, coming Monday, so see how that goes

Guys,
I have changed the HDMI cable and all my problem went away. Strange.....the old cable was not cheap at all and I had successfully used it with the old PS3 without any problem.
Since I have got the PS3 slim then all my problem had started.
Luckily it has been solved now.
I hope it will be resolved for you guys as well.

dont know what kind of tv you have but i have a samsung with monoprice hdmi cable and i get the random black screen whether it be from ps3, dvd or uverse(when fast forwarding)...i have multiple hdmi cables and the conclusion i came to is that it was an issue with the tv inputs themselves

I have a Samsung 46 inch Series 6 LCD TV, and I have never had any snow effect or anything like that with neither the old nor the new PS3 slim.
My "only" problem was to get 2-3 seconds blank screen randomly during video playback. Luckily the change of the HDMI cable fixed the problem.

Also go back and select 1080i. I saw that if a game supports 1080i and u select 720p, it'll downscale to 480p.
