I recommend using ps3 media server which can be found at http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/list it's compatible with linux so I'm assuming you would be able to use it with ubuntu. personally I've used it with windows XP and it works great on a pentium 4 3ghz, only thing is you gotta give the app maybe about 30secs to 1min to buffer before you start watching 1080p. if you have a more powerful pc it should work fine without giving it time to buffer.

all i have is a netbook, do you think that would be fine? or should i download 1080p movies and just put them on the ps3 and watch like that, or is the netbook good enough for streaming

the only downside with your setup is that the netbook would have to connect to your home network using wireless (from what I know netbooks don't have enet ports) and the transfer speed might not be good enough and it may stutter. Your netbook probably has a more powerful processor then my desktop. I guess the only way to know for sure is to test it out.
