Yes I read the stickies and yes i searched the forums and google. Problem is tooooo much information out there and I'm confused.

Objective: Stream a backed up Blu-Ray to PS3. PS3 hard wired via router to PC (PS3 Media Player installed). PS3 is hooked up via optical (toslink)to AV receiver only capable of 5.1 (has built in decoders for all formats minus the new HD formats)

I have backed up a Blu-Ray using AnyDvdHD and the main file is in *.m2ts format (~27GB). I have read a lot about "mkv to vob" "m2ts to mp4 / H.264".

Question:
It seems that the PS3 recognizes the *m2ts format so why are there all of the converters and different file formats? Is it to reduce file size? Is it to include a specifc audio format? Can I just keep the main *.m2ts file and delete all of the other miscellaneous files?

I want the best picture quality possible and preferably audio.

Can someone please take 2 seconds to explain why I need / should convert my *.m2ts files to something else? And if I should convert the file what file format should I use (and how?)?

Thanks (and yes I am a noob but you have to start somewhere)

Let's see here...

"mkv to vob" is used because, quite simply, the PS3 can't play mkv files. .mkv files are container files that can store a wide variety of streams and files (even pics, text files, etc.), including video and audio streams that the PS3 doesn't support.

"m2ts to mp4" is used... I'm not exactly sure why, but the most common reason is because there might be an encoding issue that prevents the .m2ts file from playing on the PS3. For instance, .m2ts files ripped from HD-DVDs won't work on the PS3.

You might. If you can move the file to a separate folder and still play it (on your computer), then you should be able to point PS3MP to it and stream just it.

If not, though, you should be able to get it working by converting it to .mp4.

I'm pretty sure that PS3MP will be able to make it work, though. That program can stream almost any type of file to the PS3, and if it's already in a format the PS3 will recognize, I don't doubt that it'll be able to stream that, too.

When I play the *.m2ts file it is in a different language. Could you please advise me what steps I need to make an English file that will play on the PS3. Again I apologize if this has been answered already but I am still coming up to speed on how the Streaming / Converting thing works.

Problem: *.m2ts file that I got from AnyDVD HD Blu-Ray back up is 5.1 audio in a foreign language.

Objective: any file format that the PS3 will recognize with 5.1 audio in English language.

Thanks
