Hey everyone, when ever my ps3 turns on, it does not output any video, and turns off by itself after about 20-30 seconds. I have tried to do a default setting reset, but that did not work. This all started happening because i tried updating my firmware using a previous generation ps3 and sticking that hard drive into my current one (3rd generation 40 gig model). The reason i did this is because the firmware update would not work on the 40 gig model (update froze around 60%). Does anybody know what i can do to fix this other than sending it back to sony?

If it was working prior to the changing of some hardware, it could be something shorting and overheating. Check to make sure everything is installed correctly, no board cracks, nothing been moved and touching something else. If you know someone with more knowledge, get them to check. Sony may fix it, they may not want to touch it. Maybe some other After Dawn members may be able to be more helpful. I had a similar problem with my laptop, the cause was one of the memory chips had failed, a new memory chip and problem solved.

You can always try formatting the drive to NTFS using a PC, then putting it back into the PS3...this often fixes a problem with a partial flash.

Hold Power button down for three beeps (while PS3 is off): Enter PS3 diagnostic mode (repeat procedure twice)
Also the PS3 can enter a special "Service Mode". When it does the bottom right hand corner of the screen has a red translucent rectangle with the words "Playstation 3. Factory/Service Mode" inside of the rectangle. It is rumored that by plugging a special JIG in the USB port, the PS3 is triggered into Service Mode the next time it boots up. This special mode then accepts firmware code loaded in from the USB port, and allows reflashing the firmware chip.
But ave never tried it...

Put the old hard drive back in. I had this problem and tried to solve it the exact same way....by swapping the hard drives, thinking I might be able to cancel the update, or format the hard drive and start over. Here is what the problem is: the ps3 is in the middle of an update and will not come back to life until it finishes it, no matter what. The reason it is always getting to the same point in the update is that something on the inside is most likely unplugged (or dead). Everything has to be plugged into the motherboard during an update for it to finish. The previous owner of my ps3 had obviously taken it apart (screws missing, among other signs) and had not plugged one of the blue tooth board back in completely, causing sync problems for me and a bricked firmware update which always got to about 69-70% and re-started. All I had to do was find that wire and the update completed AND my sync problems were solved. There are youtube videos that show you how to open your ps3 and look around. Before the firmware bricked the ps3, was the console exhibiting any other problems? The major ones to check would be to make sure the wifi board, blue ray drive, flash card readers (if it has it) and all the plugs for the power supply are plugged in. If the ps3 had some other kind of problem before this happened it would be easier to diagnose, because that would be the thing that is unplugged (or dead).
Good luck

The oven fix seems to work better than the heatgun fix. I would not buy a used console either. BTW...the update can be killed by memory errors as well...this is not a "plugged in" kind of thing, as those cheap black thermal pads get re-installed, and no one ever seems to think, "why am I reusing a thermal pad?"
