ps3 user and confused (cfw Gaia psn bans)

ok i have the following
Fat ps3 40gig model
updated Hd to 500 gig
spare external hd laying around
firmware 3.55
model number:Cechj03
PAL
my questions are as follows (i have searched but find conflicting answers)
1) can i install custom firmware?
2) will i get banned from psn for having custom firmware (at the moment i know no one can say about the future)
3) gaia back up manager mentions wiping logs so i am assuming that you can(or should) only play it while your lan cable is disconnected? and by extension any backed up games and after you play and restart your system its all safe to log on to psn?
4) can i back up my own ps3 titles using GAIA? or do i use something else
5) any recomanded software or tips
6)i have a jtaged 360 is cfw like that?
7) since all this is new is it better to set back and wait?
i thank you in advance for your time
a picture of my games can be provided if you doubt i buy them
running them all from the hd would be awsome as would getting back some of the functionality of otheros

i can only answer a few
you can install the cfw and not get bricked if you follow instructions .
second i advise you not to go online so disable the internet connectivity in the network tab.

I've got my PS3 IP address blocked in my router settings, so it cannot directly access the internet (it tries to even with a proxy set). Then I use PS3Prox to let the PS3 access the internet to get game updates. I can't login to the PSN like this, but the game updates work fine.

hmmm as much as i`d love to use homebrew again, to be able to play games with out having to hunt the discs down (not to mention keeping them safe from scratches) i still want to play online, while im happy to have to hunt the disc to play the online ones, i dont want to lose all online features lol
seems CFW is not for me, thank you for your responses

1) Yes just follow instructions and you will be fine.
2) No one knows what $ony is going to do.
3) Don't remember reading that for Gaia but there is a program out there that will wipe the logs.
4) Yes Gaia will backup your games for you.
5) I would use the Kmeaw CFW, been using it with Gaia 2.06 and all my backups work fine.
6) Yes it allows you to run your own code.
7) That is up to you.

it does, though may i ask, do you go online at all, from the other two replies i got the impression no one does and this puts me off it a lot

Yes you can go online and play online.
But, some people do not as even though sony is not banning yet, it is believed that they will do what microsoft did and ban them eventually. It is due to this reason some have actually bought a 2nd ps3 console, either new or second-hand or even faulty.
Most games do not require a disc if the discless feature is used, so I think you play these on a ps3 even if it has a faulty bluray drive, you just ftp the game over to the folder.
Do not use waninkoko's cfw, most ppl recommend kmeaw's cfw.
As for piracy, the way sony have handles things a lot of ppl actually say you should just to teach them a lesson :P

well i have around 40 games, so piracy is not really the point lol, it would be great to play them online from the back up manager though ...no more disc swapping (the height of lazyness i know.
custom firmware has ben about for the psp for a while, what did sony do there? might give us an indication

The only reason I use my other system for online games is habit; I got it for online play (as well as some hardware mod testing) back when the PSN was completely blocked to jailbreakers. If I only had the one system, I would be online with it. Who cares if sony bans my account? It was free...I can get a new one for free. If they ban my console? Then they ban about 10,000 other consoles with it...and someone will then find a way around the bans.

a couple tips regarding accounts just in case they do ban people....
1.) If you are a trophy whore on level 18 or something, then don't use that account...you clearly care too much about it to risk it.
2.) Don't be a trophy whore; those trophies are worthless. You bought the system to have fun, not to spend 20 hours looking for feathers to get one bronze trophy.
3.) Keep a list of the people on your friends list that you want to keep...just in case.
4.) Don't buy anything from the PSN.

Im lvl 11 trophy wise, but not bothered about the trophys
i have brought over £200 worth of psn stuff, easierly but most of it is old and unused now :( sooo many regreted purchases

Nah, we can use the proxy hack, and there will probably be 3.56 CFW by the time sony disables the proxy hack.

If protecting your discs from scratching is more important than online gaming then go head and kmeaw. PSN gaming is stealthed supposedly so you have that if your coddling your online status.

you say that but over on ps3 news some one complained gaia manager is not stealthed, aint that what you use to load backups?
or is it a case of
turn on console
signout of psn
load up gaia
select backup
run backup
once back up is running sign back into psn
play online
have i got that right?
i mean worse case scenario im happy to play all mt single player games on gaia and then insert the retail discs for online but i am lazy i want it all in the manager lol

Nah I use Rogero Stealthed and wipe me and all that other crap in which I doubt will actually work if Sony decides to ban my arse but might as well be safe.

well i installed the custom firmware using the guide on pgroove im on kmeaw cfw 3.55
it has the extra 2 folders on game menu so i know its worked
i found "Rogero Manager v7.9c Released - LV2 Patcher V5 Built Im" on the same site and downloaded Rogero_Manager_v7.9c_Waninkoko_Kmeaw_LV2_v5__3.55__Stealth.pkg
but ummm where do i put it? the guide just says install it...but how?
