When I plug my PS3 to my HDTV with an HDMI cable, everything works great.

Every so often though, the screen will just cut out to a rainbow static (pic below.

If I leave it alone for about 3 minutes, the picture will return with no gameplay problems. I can also fix it by unplugging and replugging in the HDMI cable, or by changing the channel between video inputs, or by turning the tv off and then on.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but reinitializing the connection seems to fix it.

Anyone have this problem and know a possible cause?

EDIT: Yeah, it's definitely power surges in my home causing the HDMI connection to disconnect and need reinitialization. I switched over to my old component cable (from my PS2) and everything works great. No rainbow static, but from time to time I get some intermittent analog static on the screen which is presumably where the HDMI would have dropped out.

I guess if anyone else has this problem, the solutions are either to go analog (component) or buy a line conditioner.

The problem is in the TV; otherwise changing the channel would not help. If it is under warranty, then get a new one...otherwise save your money for a new one.

Actually I just figured out the problem. It has something to do with the power in my house. Whenever I turn on something that draws a lot of juice (like the electric motor in my ceiling fan) the TV will flicker to black (still back-lit, but no signal) and then come back. Sometimes this results in rainbow static, which I described above.

I'm assuming the problem seems to occur randomly due to something else in my house (such as the refrigerator motor kicking on at random times).

Is there a dirt cheap line conditioner I could buy?

I know they run like $100 or more, but I really only need it for one plug (the TV).

Actually its has to do with HDCP i have my PS3 hooked up to my PC monitor HDMI/HDCP to DVI/HDCP. everytime i switch to an input that doesn't support HDCP like VGA then switch back to the PS3 i get the fuzz.

My PS3 is connected to a PC monitor also; I can switch back and forth between HDCP HDMI, VGA, and DVI (with or without HDCP)...no static.

You have to be a little worried when you are overloading your power lines...I'm no electrician, but that sounds like a recipe for a fire. Even if it does not start a fire, you are still wasting power and causing damage to your TV (and probably other items as well).

I have been having issues with my Panasonic Plasma TC-P50G20 and the rainbow static while playing Gran Turismo 5, I was about to exchange the TV until I found your thread.

This is what I get.

and a video

Notice I can switch to the DVR just fine but when I come back to the PS3 it is black until I turn the tv off then back on.

Have you resolved your issues via HDMI?
