I think a detailed ps3 hacking guide is needed. It should be updated frequently, because the ps3 is getting hacked more and more these days. It should describe everything with many, many details, or links to other detailed guides on specific parts(connecting ps3 with pc, via ftp client, for example). It should be simple, designed for some1 with no idea about anything, who has only played official ps3 games(that's me!).I have googled and all I found was some confusing guides, one of them stating: "If you can't follow this guide, a more detailed guide won't help you." What will then?? I mean let's face it, how can you know anything about pkg, eboot etc, since ps3 has only been recently hacked?
For example, I have 3.50 ofw. I want to play that castlevania game I saw is now possible to in the net and whatever else is possible to be downloaded and played and have no idea whatsoever, about what to do or where to start.

The guide would be changing so frequently that it would be useless. Here are some good instructions for the latest generation of hack:

So if I follow the link/ instructions to install cfw that killer bug posted will I
1. Still have to use my ps3 break 1.2 dongle method to boot up ps3 or does this cfw work totally straight up at booting back ups?
2. If I do this will I lose all the games I currently have stored on my internal?
3. Do I still have to replace the eboot files to play Gt5 and lbp2?

Just trying go get current but the scene is changing do fast and there ate do many posts it's crazy

1. No, you do not have to use your dongle anymore you just have to update to ofw 3.55 and then the kmeaw 3.55 and install ftp, lv2 and backup manager and whatever other homebrew you want. Run lv2.pkg and start you backup manager, if your using Gaia backup manager with the integrated lv2.pkg you don't have to run the lv2.pkg before running it.

2. Honestly I'am not sure about this because I just sold my old system and bough a new one, but I doubt that the system update well effect anything that on the hard drive that you placed there.

3. No you do not have to replace the eboots anymore, any game that you changed the eboot on will have to be restored to the original eboot because they might not work properly.

Somewhat more detailed guide, with some exceptions:

1)How do I copy the files into the ps3 flash drive?
2)What does "boot from XMB" mean, exactly?
3)What do I do after I finish what that guide says, in order to actually play a game?
4)My blu ray drive is opened. Whenever I want to change a game, I have to shut the ps3 down, do it manually and boot it(eject can't work, wires connecting the drive to the sensor are torn and now I always keep the ps3 partially disassembled). Is it still possible for me to hack my ps3 with this guide?

See now, in a really detailed guide, 4) would be answered, because 3) would be.

EDIT: A guide, like the one I describe wouldn't be pointless. Sure things change, but we newbs need to understand this whole ordeal, on our terms. For example, from what I've read from this guide you linked, I better understood package managers, cfws for ps3, pkg files and other things. These concepts would baffle me, were I to try and hack the ps3 without that guide. And for a newb like me to understand them, that would mean a day or two of googling everything relevant to the ps3 hacking scene.
But the whole idea is that u don't have to be a technology guru, to do stuff with the technology available to you. That's called abstraction and it is very important in the pc world.
Were that guide more detailed, I would understand everything I would need to. Keeping it updated as well, would allow for a bridge between old and new knowledge, not to mention a standard place to look for updates. It would be hard for the one making the guide, but not impossible.
This is where these forums come in. I've seen how amazing they are and I know some member here is the ps3 guru we want to write such a guide!

I've been keeping up as best as I can for the past two months or so with all the threads across this forum and others.

I'm still on official firmwares as of now and waiting to see how things play out before doing anything.

I have one question I haven't seen addressed since the 3.41 dongles were the big thing... What shows up as the game you are playing when playing through a backup manager? Last I read it showed that you were playing BM and not an actual game... Is this still the case? If it is, a lot of people will see bans shortly.

Also do trophies save normally when using a BM?

You don't play games through the backup manager. It just mounts the games. Go on PSN and it just says you have been playing that game; not backup manager. Backup manager has no effect on trophies or game patches either.

"Boot from XMB" means you start the game from the XMB, like a regular game. If you have a disk in the drive (any disk) it will show up as whatever game you selected in the backup manager, and you can start it like a normal disk-based game. If you don't have a disk in the drive. After you install kmeaw, there are two new icons in the "Game" part of the XMB. One allows you to install packages from a thumb drive, the other lets you start loaded games when you have no disk in the drive. You can also do direct-booting that will start the game right from the backup manager, but this does not work with some games.

Thanks for the info. Only reason I asked is because I had seen posts before indicating it said you were playing backup manager... ie from http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/ps-jailbreak-faq-64970/

Quote:
Will I be banned from PSN for playing backups?
As far as we know, no one has been banned for this as yet. However, no one knows if/when Sony can detect it and ban your account/ip/console from PSN. Only time will tell. Currently your online status will say "Playing: Backup Manager" Title ID: LAUN12345. So in it's current form, it is definitely detectable online. What Sony will actually do about it is yet to be seen.

Please note also that just because you play your backup online today without consequence, it doesn't mean you won't get banned tomorrow or next week or next month. Microsoft logs users with modified DVD-ROM firmware for months and then bans all those consoles in one fell swoop, once or twice a year. Until the first person is banned from PSN we won't know Sony's policy on this.
I had not seen anything since indicating this was fixed... but maybe I missed it... kinda hard to keep up with the 100+ page threads that are out there.

Well I am going to wait until monday, see if the weekend brings about any more updates or improvements. Very tempted to just install it now, but I think people will be coming out with better cfw every weeks for the next couple of weeks.

I just hope someone creates a media player or app which allows the ps3 to play all the popular codecs being used atm, such as mkv, ogg, with subtitle support.

I'm actually hoping for those features right from the firmware...there is already a media player app built in...sony refuses to make it work, so it is up to the community. NTFS support would be nice too...I know that open source NTFS isn't perfect, but it is more than good enough to read files from a thumb drive.

BTW...it isn't hard to keep up with the news if you know where to look. PS3hax.net has a great news department...they only focus on one thing, but they do it really, really well.

I totally agree, they're on point with the PS3 news. Once you start reading everywhere, it all comes together!

Ok, question 2) answered, questions 1),3) and 4) remain.

Btw, not that it matters, but I dont understand what ur saying when u say "install packages from a thumb drive" and what the difference between "start loaded games when you have no disk in the drive" and "direct-booting" is, or how the latter could be done.

Direct booting is just click the game, it starts. "start loaded games when you have no disk in the drive" is the old way that has better compatibility; after selecting the game, you are kicked back to the XMB and from there you have to select that icon to start the game.

The reason I said "start loaded games when you have no disk in the drive" is because there are a few games that need a disk (any PS3 game) in the drive to work; these games should be started from what will appear to be the actual game disk for the game you are playing (for example, if you have bioshock in the drive and you select bioshock 2 from the backup manager, you will only see bioshock 2; it replaces the icon for bioshock 1).

By thumb drive I mean a USB flash drive...you just stick the PKG files you download onto the root of that drive, and then use the icon I mentioned to install them.

So, thumb drive icon works for any game.
The other icon work with no disc in drive, is the most compatible way, but still some games require direct booting.
Direct booting is booting directly from the backup manager. This way you must have a disc in the drive, you boot directly from where the disc always is on xmb, after running backup manager. Not as compatible as the previous way.

If I've gotten this right, what does compatible mean exactly? If I've gotten this wrong, what did I get wrong?

Regardless, having this onversation isn't as important to me, as answering my 1),3) and 4) questions...but is this conversation actially an answer to 3)?

Close...the thumb drive icon is for installing utilities like the backup manager, lv2 app, permissions apps, etc...anything within a PKG, even emulators and homebrew games...not sure on the PKG files downloaded from the PSN tho...I'll have to try that later.

No games require direct booting, but some games require you to have a disk in the drive. Once you select the game in the backup manager, the manager closes, and you start the game just like you would on a non-jailbroken system (by selecting the bluray icon).

Direct booting is when you start the game right from the backup manager, instead of selecting it, closing the manager, and manually starting it from the XMB by selecting an icon. This method is the easiest, but some games won't load this way.

If a game does not load with direct boot (or if it crashes a lot), use the other, slower method. If it still does not work, then slide any old PS3 game into the drive, re-run the backup manager, and try direct boot with a disk in the drive. Still no go? Try the slow method, but select the bluray disk icon instead of the "/hdd0/game" icon.

Hey,

1. been reading the posts on afterdawn and still cant figure out how to transfer the game from external usb disk drive to internal ps3 disk using rogero manager...

2. when i turn on the Rogeros manager,in bottom left corner shows three hard drives:internal ps3 HD, external usb disk, and external USB stick. on the main screen it is written insert disc or press pause to select different path (something like that)
but when i get to the set up process there is no path which would specify my external usb disk with game on it? any ideas.

next ting is where to put the files.i have formated the disk to proper partition put in folder PS3 with sub folders PHOTO,MOVIE,MUSIC,GAME,GAMEZ(somewhere i read that it has to be with Z otherwise PS# will not recognize it)...
now what i would like to know is if I have put the game in the right folder (GAMEZ/two worlds/) I coppied three files downloaded from internet called:PS3_GAME,PS3_UPDATE and normal file PS3_DISC.sfb which wer put in the folder BLES00845...

Thanks for your time and answer

Copy of what? I haven't downloaded anything from anywhere. I will only take the steps of the guide, when I'll have understood it completely.

These are all questions referring to the guide KillerBug gave a link to, in this thread(2nd post).
