Resizing PS3 HDD Partitions without formatting?

Long time no post. I have recently been wondering about using my PS3 to render Maya scenes. I have the older 80GB PS3 version somewhere between losing backwards compatibility and the the new slim version. I swapped out the small 80GB drive with a 150GB drive and formatted it. Now that I have quite a few gigs of content downloaded from the PSN store (demos, games), I don't want to backup, format the drive while partitioning for linux, restoring the backup, then redownloading all the stuff from the PSN store. I'm wondering how the PS3 uses the HDD as far as the partition table goes. I would much rather pop the drive into my external enclosure and shrink it making a new partition for linux. Or, do I have to partition using the PS3's format option?
