I've been using Linksys WRT54G with tomato installed. I've never had issues with it with my PS3 until we moved. At times theres 3 PS3s,3 laptops,2 Iphones hooked up to it.
Since theres more devices hooked up to it than it's used to the router has been freezing and normally has to be rebooted to get it going again.
I think by todays standards Wireless G router is considered old. Shoul I upgrade and get a new and better router? Whats the best router to get if I have 8 or more wireless devices connected to it most of the time?

Just for a test, why not try a couple other custom firmwares? Maybe Tomato just does not like your current situation.
