I was totally going to slip this update (3.1). But guess what? I can't sign in unless I update to 3.1. Which means that I can't game online unless I update. I am so sick of this $#!@. I swear I am going to break something if my PS3 gets bricked. When Sony says you have the option to refuse,what they don't tell you is the other option is to not be allowed to go online.
Just venting...

3.1 is an important update anyway...3.0 caused bricked systems...even weeks after the update. If you have 3.0, you should upgrade ASAP.
Yes, you need to be up to date to go online. The same is true of 360, and even PC games must have all the patches and updates to go online, so I don't know why you would think that PS3 should not need updates to go online!
Also, most of their country-limited betas are japaneese. I can get these without issue just by opening another PSN account on my system and using a proxy...I have even had to do this with some things that were only released in europe & australia...why can't you get the USA betas?
There are several versions of home throughout the world...it isn't a matter of being up-to-date with the other ones, as they are all different. Personaly, I think the Asian PS Home is the best...much bigger spaces, and it looks nicer too. If you want to get access to foreign spaces with your local account, there are several tricks to doing this. The easiest way is to get someone to invite you, then save the area as a favorite...but this does not always work (I have not even tried it since the early 2.x firmwares...they might have "fixed" this). You can also do a little bit of playing around with save files untill every area from every version of PShome will be open to you...but why? It is a beta, it has lots of issues, and is very incomplete. It is a cool idea, and would be nice if they could fix all the bugs...but don't expect that any time soon. Xbox360 does not even have a "Home", so if you don't like it, don't use it!

Yeah, I guess I'm just fed up with the whole system. Not the updates in particular. My PS3 is no longer under warranty and every update that comes up, I fear losing $150. I have my data backed up, so I'm not worried about losing anything. It just upsets me when I read stories of people calling Sony when their systems are bricked by a fw update and they don't give a rats a$$. If they break your out-of-warranty system, then too bad. I've read some claims that Sony reps actually tell people that they have the choice to refuse the update. Any truth to that really pisses me off.
It's probably all good though. I'll check when I get home tonight. I was pretty annoyed last night anyway. My wifes friend called, so the TV was free and I had a little time to get a quick Uncharted multi, only to be stopped dead in my tracks. And then it took over 5 minutes just to get to 1% downloaded. So I ranted and went to bed. It actually woudn't have been that bad if half the time I played earlier in the evening wasn't a complete waste. I would get to the end of a co-op with my friends, and we would freeze and have to quit, losing all of our loot. If it weren't for a combination of buggy connections, buggy servers and random noobs quitting halfway through a co-op, I would be at level 45 instead of 31. Uncharted online plays smoothly about 95% of the time for me. Which is good. But that 5% annoys me to no end :P

I don?t think it should be mandatory unless it has something in it that will affect Online with others. I would prefer to wait a few days to do the up date but still be able to play online. Kids were over last night, plopped down to play COD MW2 online ? NO ? Update required. Oh well, it was quick and caused no problems. We will never use facebook on the PS3.

Well the truth is that ps3 have become a bit of "features by country" console.
I dont know for you people but i did the 3.10 update and i didnt see any new features.
Actually the only new was
Polish language???? WTF i need that?
Something about the picture gallery, that i didnt and i wont check it out.
If you got something else with 3.1 please tell me so cause even the update at the start only noted this 2 things.

Mine was the same...think the EU update was pretty crappy. TBH, I don't really think there's much more sony could add to the console that I would want. I dont use the system for anything other than playing games and watching movies, and those functions all work fine.
Personally, I'm not interested in any facebook add-ons, or I-Player etc, I have a PC for all that stuff.

Now i am really really ruined/ desapointed, they should at least ask for the damn thing or have it optional through PSS.

SDF_GR, I think you have a good idea. Have the stuff like that on the Play Station Store. If you want it, go get it. Other wise, leave me alone. Dont get me wrong, i'm glad that Sony is trying to please everyone while doing it for Free. Not everyone likes Onions on their burger. It is out of sight thow, it's ok.

Not the Icon. Making me do a system up date for something I don?t care about. All be it, not that big of a deal. I steal like SDF_GR?s idea.
I dont like how everybody kills me on COD MW2 online and i cant kill hardely anyone.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. The UK finally have a video store now, surely that's a bigger update than the facebook connection.
We all know there will be more updates to come so why complain about the ones we are getting now for free, If you don't like it don't use it. Simpulz.

It is also the colors of the friend boxes in the XMB and a few other things. This update is actualy 3.10, 3.1 was already out. Not all games require the update, but most do. Personaly, I like this because it makes development of cheat devices impractical...and cheater-filled servers are why I don't play many PC games online anymore. The constant required updates are also part of the copy protection...if you could use an old firmware to play online, then there would be enough time to crack the firmware to play copied games.

FB on the PS3 is pointless. You could already check FB on the PS3 using the internet browser before this update. Same with twitter and myspace or any other website...
And it takes forever to type stuff using the controller. Same goes with FB and Twitter on the 360. So retarded.
Why cant they just focus on important things like improving online game speed and xmb usability.
PS3...it only does everything(that Sony allows it to)

Its not the same thing, the FB add on, posts your trophies, games youve bought etc, to your Facebook page automatically.

Oh Man. I dont act like that but that kid is just waiting to bust out of me. That is how I feel. I'm getting a little older and the age or Firmware is messing my play up. I think it's the Firmware. My kids make fun of me when I play now. "Dad, you want me to beat that level for you" Very funny video.

It is that this update is the most meaningless/ useless PS3 update ever.
i downloaded and update that every time that i DL an update i get adrenaline rush (not to have a power failure) and for what?
Better Polish language support and something about picture gallery?....and facebook? now my life and my 25+year game experience is completed!

You want to know something else, i live in greece, under video at the XMB i dont have a PS Store icon. you know why?
Cause from the PSS i can only DL Movie trailers and that Shoot Series, nothing else that has to do with media and i mean nothing.

They can separate FW's in the same region, but they couldent separate if you are based in poland or not? we are fooling our self's here.
Question: Under Video at the XMB do you have a TV icon? cause i think that i have seen it in a video of the XMB some were on the net, but i cant find it again to verify it.
My PS3 doesn't have it, that is why i am asking.
if you have it please post your region or country if that is ok with you.

Not here in the USA. I think EU has the TV recording thing that they can hook up to the PS3. I would thin that would be under Video.
