I've been reading a ton of information about PS3 hacks, and I justed wanted someone to clarify something for me.
You currently need 3 things to hack a PS3:
1) PS3
2) Hacking Device
3) .pkg Files
1) Can be any PS3 3.41 firmware or lower.
2) Can be anything from a Calculator to a Cell phone to one of the many dongles for sale.
3) These are the install files.
Am I right to assume that all device number 2 is doing is putting the PS3 into developer mode so you can install unsigned .pkg files? If this is true, it doesn't really matter what device you use, does it? Not matter what, they all do the same thing: put the PS3 in developer mode. Once it is in Dev Mode, you can install any .pkg file you want, right? So there are no "features" that on device can have over another, aside from being updateable to possibly supporting firm wares past 3.41 in the future?
I mean, until CFW is developed, not matter what device you use, if you turn your PS3 off you have to reinsert it to put it back in dev mode when you turn it back on. So doesn't this pretty much amount to buy whatever device is the cheapest or just use your phone, cause in the long run it won't matter? As long as your PS3 is in dev mode, one device is indistinguishable from the other?
I have a 2g iphone and a TI-84+, but I think I am going to buy a device because I don't want to have to plug in my calculator or phone every time I want to turn on the PS3, when I could just leave the device in it. As long as I don't plan on updating my firmware, it shouldn't matter WHAT device I get, right?
The only differences between the various dongles, cell phones, calculators, dev boards, etc sre price and reliability. You can get a Teensy for $25 shipped (once they get stock again; they are sold out)...it will do everything perfectly fine. This is where the open-source hack started...so it is probably where all the advancements will hit first.
Also, you need a PS3 with 3.41 firmware. If you have a lower firmware (like a firmware with linux support) you will have to update to 3.41 for it to work AFAIK.
