If they do that, then gamefly goes out of business (at least for PS3). If gamefly goes out of business, I will be forced to pirate games before I buy them, and once they are pirated, I probably won't bother to buy them. On top of that, it would only apply to online games because they would get hacked in no time...so pirates would be downloading PKG files without any trouble, and legitimate users would have to go through a whole ordeal!
Something tells me that they are just dumb enough to try it, hide their failure by faking the numbers, and then continue doing it on the basis that the numbers are good.

Agreed, this is a very stupid idea. I just don't know WTF is really wrong with Sony since the last year. It seems like "We Make Stupid Decisions" Should be their new motto.

For once more $0ny is trying to gain something out of thin air, they are using the hack for/and as an excuse to get a hit on used games....The wet dream of all companies.
From the other hand though,
It would be better to give an interview and say "we've been raped by the hackers", than doing the serial number thing IMO.....This move is just too bloody embarrassing.

...or just download a PKG file and start playing for free...hmmm...if sony forces me to be a pirate, I might just become one.

Sony is just dumb and desperate enough to try this. They have lost the PSP entirely to hackers, I think they are willing to try every measure to prevent happening the same to the PS3.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

I was going to type something really long here about how I've been burned by sony regarding hardware since the PSOne (original, first gen) but I'll just say this instead:
Fuck'em.
Sony is so out of touch with reality at present that they can't distinguish between those who genuinely want to help them by exposing security issue with their systems and those who are simply trying to make a quick buck or exploit the vulnerabilities solely for personal gain.
I invested in the PS3 in order to aid my education in computer science while I was in university. Cell processor technology and OtherOS were the two reasons that I bought the system. I didn't buy a single game for the console until the hypervisor was locked up by that 2.xx firmware update (2.15, 2.50, I forget)
So I'm happy to see that Sony is reaping their reward for screwing over their customer base. I stopped updating my original 60GB PS3 back in March or April of 2010 and I'm looking forward to the homebrew that comes out soon. If I do go back to playing games you can bet that I won't be buying them.

M$ must be laughing all the way to the bank! I bet if this rumour is true, M$ would just love $ony to do this. And then M$ can then advertise that they dont chain up their customers, or charge them to play a game they already bought, etc.
Something like this will also kill the rental services. It is so nice to see sony dig their own grave though.

Not really. The consoles don't bring that much money, it's the game revenues that pay out. Both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are still massively subsidized.

in the end developers don't want there games being downloaded by pirates. Sony only care because hackers then will just go to another console. Am not sure if the PS3 is too big or not, if developers will leave it or not.

I totally agree m4r0v3r. Pirates will just switch to other consoles. Regular buyers are gonna be pissed when they try to sell their used game and cant cuz its locked.

well, now that the PS3 is being opened up, I'm planning on buying one (and, naturally, lots of games to go with it). However... I have to wait to see what the fallout is from all this. If Sony goes Nazi, then they simply won't get my business.
I'm not going to buy a game that I can't backup, or that I can't be sure I could play 10 years from now. And this would kill that. If I spend the big bucks they're asking on a game, I'm damned sure not going to be "renting" it.

Does anyone actually think that Sony will do this serial code?! Theres a reason why EB games don't take PC games on trade. And as far as fall out. The only fall out or casualties from all this hacking BS are the legit user.MW2 online is rendered unplayable due to hackers, this will be the same soon enough for Black Ops. Modern Warfare:Domination being out barely a week is already hacked and now there has been reports that peoples PSN account are being accessed.
But hey i'm just defending Sony as I am a big Fanboy :/ Its all fun and games until your online gaming experience is ruined and your Credit Card info is accessed.
But hey. You guys have fun with your "backed up" games.Oh and how is other OS working out? Not using it? Yeah I didn't think so either.

Sony will not do the whole phone call thing but maybe something along the lines of a repository where the PS3 checks the game against a valid stored serial number for those who try to go online with it (obviously this couldn't affect offline play with backups). This way it's automated and there's no need for an intrusive and inconvenient call. It would possibly keep online backup play at a minimum?

I am guessing that the phone call is just a backup as well, but that does not make this any smarter. It will still kill rental and resales, many people without internet connections will still have to make phone calls to play their games, and the pirates will go through it as easily as a cat walking through prison bars. Heck, there will be a lot of people cracking the games they paid for just to avoid the BS.
The thing is, people think jailbreakers are pirates. I was banned from the nexus for mentioning that my PS3 was jailbroken...I paid for the game and did nothing illegal (and explained that clearly), but was banned for piracy anyway. That is how the world sees PS3 jailbreakers. Nevermind that 99% of the users over there use PC, and PCs essentially come jailbroken. Nevermind that xbox360 was cracked almost immediately after release. I mean, the PS3 was out for 4 years before the jailbreak, and everyone seems to assume that it is full of pirates...NEWS FLASH: 99% of pirates are on PC or xbox360; other than the people who have purchased the system in the past few months, we all bought our systems assuming that there might never be any route to piracy, and we were fine with that.

Blockbuster and the other spots for rental were almost going out of business, imagine if they break this out. But honestly, i see it as a bit far fetched. $ony will just look straight up desperate if they do this.

Blockbuster doesn't have to wait for Sony to do this (they won't). Gamefly and Netflix is already helping them along quite nicely to go out of business.

Cos $ony is not making a cent from your backup, and they feel that they should, well actually they prefer you go out and buy another copy at the full rrp.
