I have downloaded batman arkham asylum and when i go into the folder there are two other folders 1.PS3_GAME
2.PS3_UPDATE
and a file called PS3_DISC.SFB what i am wondering is if i play this game does the update folder update my PS3 to FW 3.42 or is it just something that needs to be ther inorder for the game to work. This has me a bit worried cos im afraid it will update my ps3. If anyone can help mw out and let me know if it is ok to play the game without it updating PS3 then that would be great thanks.

Have the folders in mine as well, I think it contains info on where to look for game updates when you are playing the game and it has a connection to the internet.
Cant remember which game it was, but heard an update messed up the game a bit, so i didnt download it, decided to wait for a fix, but during gameplay it kept asking me to update.
So I thinks its just to make sure the game is up to date when online.

Most game updates will be below 3.42, also you can delete the .PUP file in the PS3_UPDATE folder.

yeah I was playing uncharted 2 and I notice that my ps3 would hang up and they shut off and restart (the 3 beeps) also sometimes the game was freezing the system when just trying to boot. I deleted the update folder and all was well.

Does the update folder initiate the game update? I have had no problems leaving it, but Ive only tried a couple. I have seen a lot of talk about getting the game updates to work, mine have all installed fine. And wouldn't you want the latest update for the game? Please correct me if this is not what the update folder is for.

I'm curious as to its purpose also, but it definitly does not update the ps3 firmware as far as my experience with two different games.

Yes this is what the update folder for is for but sometimes for some reason when you get the updates which is suppose to make the game better it actually screws up the playback using the jailbreak for some reason.

Are you sure, I've never been asked to update firmware? So if I were to delete this folder, it would still find the latest game updates? Also, so should I decline game updates unless I feel it is absolutly needed?
Thanks for the input

Yes i am sure, why would you be asked to update, when you are already on a higher firmware that is on the disc, Call Of Duraz, for example has firmware 2.76 in the update folder as you are already on 3.41, you aren't going to be asked to update to 2.76.
As i said on the third post of this thread, it is perfectly fine to delete PS3UPDAT.PUP.

Good point, I see now. Is the .pup the file the only file in the update folder, so it has absolutely nothing to do with the game updates? I thought the folder may contain both the firmware and the game update, or the trigger to download the game update anyways.

Its firmware and firmware only, nothing else, just firmware.
