I'm getting a ps3 saturday(oo yeah) but i cant decide which version to get My choices are 3:
get the 60gb PAL region- i want it because it can play ps2 games, not all of them, the PAL 60gb uses software emulation, not like the NTSC one(even though i still use my ps2) It has memory card readers and and 4 usb ports. But it dosen't come with the dualshock 3 and i heard the 6ogb's get the ylod(Yellow light of death-google it ;), so i am kinda scared. The price on this is 550(not dollars another currency)
get the 80g PAL This one is basiccally like the 40gb NTSC but with a 80gb hard drive. It has no card readers, 2 usb ports, no ps2 compatabillity, but it does come with a dualshock 3 and a free game. The price on this is 550 too
Or get the 250gb slim for 700. The pro's are that it is new and all that, comes with a free game. But i dont think it's worth 150 more when i can buy a 250 hard drive for less and upgrade it.
Do NOT get the 60GB. Most of them have died and the little that are still working are apparently having loads of problems.
Get the 250GB Slim. It uses less power and less heat, which will decrease the chance of overheating. IMO, it's worth it because it'll probably last longer considering that it uses a smaller chip than all the other PS3s.

Do you have any empirical evidence that "most" of the 60 GB PS3's have died, or is it just random anecdotes? I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but such a claim needs to be underpinned by factual evidence, or it's nothing more than FUD.

Don't buy the 250...it is for suckers. Get yourself the cheap version of the slim, and if you ever need more space, then put the $50 you saved towards a nice 500GB or maybe even a 1TB.
I still have my launch ps3 60gb and it's going strong after 5 years of gaming(daily use as a media server too). though i did have to replace the blu ray laser last year. just take care of your ps3 and keep it well ventilated and it'll last. no matter what you decide just know that the hard drives are extremely easy to upgrade so don't waste money on a higher version.
Some get lucky with the 20GB & 60GB units, but they do have higher failure rates than the 80GB and later models. Buying an old 20GB, 60GB, 80GB, or even 40GB is a very risky prospect, as they usually don't hit ebay until their first heatgun fix. The 40GB & 80GB ones tend to be more reliable, but the ebay units are still usually home-hack-fixed.
