After two hours of tampering, I've finally gotten my PS3 down to its raw mobo. I've been watching these series http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAmpDwqCgnI for guidance on how to do so. My 40GB Non-BC PS3 just YLOD this afternoon and luckily I think it's one of the easier models to disassemble. So I just had a few questions before I start doing some crucial things to try to fix it/using a heat gun.

I'll be using a heat gun on all the points the guy shows on the video. Right now I see quite an amount of thermal glue on the things on the actual mobo and the places where those things made contact. Do I clean them off using a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol, then reapply it only on the things on the mobo?

Also, I know the reason the PS3 YLOD'd in the first place was because it overheated. It's gets a little hot in my house and the PS3 is tucked away in a somewhat confined area. Will the YLOD come back even if I leave it in an open space and buy a third party fan that is made just for the PS3 for added cooling?

Need to find a heat gun tomorrow, because if I can't, I'll have to resort to a blowdryer and the odds of that getting hot enough are slim. I really hope this fix works, has anyone attempted doing all this and none of it actually working? Oh and just a side note, but the stories I read about people putting their PS3's in a box and wrapping it in towels then blowdrying it for half and hour thus being hot enough to solder the wires inside is just crazy.

A user by the name of gilksy1 has a good step by step video on Youtube. He also has a site where you can DL a pdf of how to fix YLOD in detail with Pics.

Well I just tried it for 15 seconds all sections for both sides and it still YLOD. I was extremely pissed and had lost hope. Then I extended it to 30 seconds for the small chips and 45 for the bigger ones on each side. Then I put everything back together hoping it would work. Pressed it and the light stayed green. Thank god, but all was not well. It stayed on for a couple minutes (without being plugged into video) and then the fan got EXTREMELY loud and it shut itself off with a yellow light. Plugged in video and turned it on, no video came up for a couple seconds then it was a black screen, then the fans kicked in critically again and shut off. Finally I put in my HDD, and I got it to where it said "Cannot start. The correct hard disk was not found." then fans happened again and shut off. What should I do? I'm letting it rest overnight and hopefully when I wake up it'll work better. I'm getting really tired of all these repairs. The moment it starts working, I'm taking advantage of Gamestop's trade any PS3 system in for $200.

That's the thing with these YLOD fixes. They're there's a 50/50 chance it may or may not work.I sold my 60GB original release PS3 and the guy I sold it to has had to fix it twice and so far it is still kicking (just my luck eh.)If you can manage to fix it and have it pass Gamestop testing it then yes I would definitely trade it in.

I think it's the thermal glue I used. It's not transferring the heat properly and makes the fans think that the system is really hot. I used something called CoolJag and it didn't look like what I thought it would. Instead of looking like liquid paper it looks like clay, really. So I'll probably stop by the store and buy some $20 Arctic thermal glue. But I solved the HDD problem, I didn't push the HDD hard enough in, haha.

Do yourself a favor and do a fan fix while you are in there to install good thermal compound.

Here are pictures of the compound, going to clean it out with rubbing alcohol once I get the new stuff.

Also, the Arctic product I'll be buying is Arctic MX-3 because I didn't see any Arctic Silver up at Micro Center and I think that's the only store that sells the product.

Soo...this fix is temporary correct? I just want to make sure because I don't want to have to trade in my console if I don't have to. I have many accounts on my PS3 and one of them is banned meaning I can never retrieve the things I bought on that account if I get a new PS3. Once I am able to properly get on the PS3 (I was able to get on for about 2 minutes to XMB before fans kicked on), and if I'm planning on selling my console, all I should do is deactivate all my accounts correct?

Actually, there is a transfer utility now; once you get a new PS3, you can hook both units up at once, and transfer everything off of the old one and onto the new one. I am not sure how the banned account will transfer, but this method saves you from having to redownload stuff from a working account, so it might also work with banned accounts.

Yes, the way you did this, and continue to do it, this is a very temporary fix. If you plan to sell the old one rather than doing a remotely proper fix, you should not even power up the old unit until you have a new one and you are ready to do the transfer.

Well I applied some Arctic Silver 5, the genuine stuff, let it sit overnight, and afterwards I still have the same problem. The console turns on and then the fan whirs up after a minute increasing in speed and then finally automatically shutting off. I know I applied a good amount of AS5, thin, light coat and I can almost see through it. Should I remove it and try the heat gun again? I don't get what's the problem.

EDIT: Turns out I didn't have enough compound. I put on a lot more than I thought I needed and now the fan doesn't seem to spin up right away. It took a lot longer but the fans still spin up pretty loud but it didn't shut off. I turned off the system and disassembled it again. The heat shield was definitely hot, a very good sign right? I pulled off the mobo again and saw the GPU definitely touched onto the heat sink but not the CPU. So I put more onto that side without spreading it to make sure it spreads itself about contact. Now it's reassembled and I'm letting it run for awhile to see what happens.

FYI, gamestop will not accept a PS3 that doesnt have a warranty sticker still on it. I hope you fix it as I have just gotten a used slim from there with a two year warranty, for only 20 more than retail. Sweet deal since Sony will only offer one year for YLOD.

It sounds like you might need to do the washer hack...get a couple of large washers with small holes in them, put the screws going to the CPU sink through them, and then tighten it all down.

Oh, I forgot to ask...after you did the heatgun fix, did you remove the cover of the GPU, and replace the thermal grease inside? If not, you should do this, as the heatgun fix destroys the old compound. Also note that those 4 metal things around the GPU are the support for the cap, but they are also components that need to be cooled. It is advisable to use arctic adhesive, evenly spread across all 4 of these, to secure the top cover.

You paid $20 extra, plus your old system for one extra year of warranty? That does not sound like a sweet deal to me...that sounds like the standard bestbuy deal, only you have to give them a parts system worth about $80-$100.

Thanks killerbug for the suggestion. I did not replace the thermal grease because I'm not sure what the GPU cover looks like, is it the metal plate with the letters RSX? Also not sure what 4 metal things you're referring to. Sorry but I don't think I'll be opening up my PS3 again anytime soon, I'm still extremely stressed and frustrated from opening it 10+ times. There is one thing I didn't mention, one of my screws stripped in the PS3. It's the one of the four big bolt-like screws that hold down two clamps against the hot plate. They're right below the blu-ray drive. The screw would not come out properly and it stripped with me trying. So I had to get a wrench and twist it out but it twisted the actual screw and the end part of the screw in stuck inside the hole which is the heat sink. So that's why I had to apply more thermal paste to the CPU (I think or GPU?) so that it would make contact with the heat sink. That's why the fans were going crazy at first, the fan wasn't even touching it.

But I don't think my mind will be at ease because I am scared to death of my PS3 YLODing again. I don't think you guys have any idea how much time I spent trying to fix it and opening it over and over again. So I only played a 30 minute game session, and while the fan did not speed up like it did pre-YLOD, I am still very scared because everyone always says how this fix is temporary. I'm going to try to find an external fan because I've heard that has made post-YLOD PS3s last and are still kicking. Trying to find it locally but all I see it for is for the slim.

Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to give you guys a rundown of all the details.

Wow...why didn't you mention the fact that you are missing one of the two screws that hold down the CPU cooler? You don't think that might have been something of note when posting..."The heatsink isn't attached, any ideas why it is overheating?"

I recommend you get rid of this system quick; heatgun repairs are always temporary...even when done by someone who knows what they are doing. It is a miracle that you were able to get it running at all. Either do the fix right, or pass it off on some sucker, but a slim, and never try to fix anything ever again!

It was a great deal, the slim was in pristine condition, was 279 plus 40 for the warranty and im covered for 2 years. Plus i only paid 90 bucks for a ylod console and kept the warranty sticker intact, and got 200 out of a 40 gb PS3. So tell me how that wasnt a good deal? Plus Im selling a 60 gb PS3 and ill have about 40-50 buck in a 120 gb slim. Id say thats pretty nice..

Wow...I thought that you got an average deal for a new system, and then gave them your old one for free. Now that I know you got a used system, I know that you got ripped off, and then you gave them your old system for free.

...And $50 for a 60GB system? The used bluray drive is worth that much!

Those gamestop guys are con artists sometimes...and you got conned.

What are you reading?? I still have my 60 gb system that is being sold on ebay right now. I have 80 bucks in a 120 gb slim system (used) with a 2 year warranty. So I guess making 110 (profit) dollars on a 40 gb system and making around 150 (profit) on a 60 gb console is being conned. I actually traded in the YLOD console i fixed and made way more than if I sold it on ebay or locally. So please try and read things before you try and comment on them.
