4.0 firmware questions before I update

Right now my wii is firmware version 4.0. Before I update it to the newest firmware for game compatibility, is there anything I need to do?
Its chipped with a wiikey and I do use the homebrew channel and have it installed.

And also I have the old original bootmii installed which I read needs updated anyway.

My main concern is I want to be able to still install wads after I update.

I guess I should also ask. Do any newer games require anything above the 4.0 firmware?
Just wondering so if the kids throw a new game in and tell me it wont play.
