If I have a virgin 4.1U Wii is it a big deal to update to 4.2U prior to softmodding. There is no disadvantage correct?

wrong. 4.2 is more finky with softmodding.

stay on 4.1 and mod from there.

I've softmodded several wiis, some were 4.2 and others were earlier firmwares, mostly 4.1. I had no more difficulty the 4.2 wiis than I did the others. They just take an extra couple steps which take about 3 minutes.

That said though, there's really no advantage to updating either. Since you're on 4.1 already theres no real reason to update. Just mod it from where it is.

But doesn't 4.2 let you use the shopping channel..


Wouldn't it be better to do 4.2 then softmod?

It is possible to update the shop channel via a wad file and remain on 4.1 if you really wanted to use the shop channel.

i can vouch for that. wiiscu worked for me. have my shop channel, and installed the latest internet channel from there with no side effects.
