yep. I have a wiikey and I updated and all is fine.
Down the road if you want to insall homebrew, or load wad files, which are Virtual Console channels, you will have to use a cIOS file which is basically a softmod. 4.0u plugs some of the exploits that allow homebrew to run.
You are safe either way, but if you dont care for homebrew and only want to play games then updating wont require any additional steps on your part. Update away.
by the way we are up to 4.1u so if you update via wifi 4.1u is what you will get. I have read several posts that say 4.1u is also fine.
I have Wii from lauch day, Firmware 3.4e with Wiikey 1.
I have read in this thread that after updating to 4.1e, that the Wii no longer read backups.
Then I read that 4.1e does not affect hardmodded Wiis.
Like sam1233, I do not use homebrew. I just play backup games.
I rented Beeeeetles Rockband, and it is asking me to update. I am scared!
You should be fine updating to 4.1 firmware if you have a Modchip. But this isn't 100% true in all cases. I have seen a few that have had issues after updating. As for the reason they have issues after updating is beyond me. But I would bet most people that have a Wiikey and updated to 4.1 firmware had no issues.
