Well I've been reading on soft modding the black Wiis with the new drive and I know you can only use the usb to play backed up games. Is there ever going to be a time when the new drive will be able to use discs? Or are they just not bothering with it?

i think some people swap drive pcb's with older ones, but why bother in the first place.
usb loader has way more advantages and requires no physical modification. also, all games and apps can be stored on the external drive, keeping them in one place.
