brawl 4.1 backup question

i've just noticed today that my brawl backup only runs if the wii is connected to wifi, when it's not connected to my wireless connection, it stays at a blank screen after pressing start at the title. it never done this when i used 3.3. sorry if this is a stupid question, but is this suppose to happen?
