hello all, i've recently begun installing emulators and wads on my wii, and figured i should try to learn more about brick protection. i'm on a 4.2u wii, and i followed larry's guide to softmod. i was brand new to the scene (am still fairly new, but know alot more now), and i just did exactly what he said without really knowing what i was doing. i remember doing something with boot2, but i'm not sure what it did, and what files are stored where, etc. am i about as safe as one can be at this point after having used larry's guide? is there anything i should check or do to make sure i have all necessary safety nets? thank you

First of all, can you give me a link to Larry's Guide to see what you installed?

If you didn't you should install priiloader. Hold the reset button when you turn on the wii. If a menu doesn't appear, you don't have priiloader. Also you should install the trucha-patch in your IOS if you haven't already. This will allow for the booting on fakesigned discs, making it easier to unbrick. You should also install cIOSCORP. In case you brick, you can autoboot discs without needing a modchip & you can boot games from the disc channel.

first off, thanks for the reply. here is a link to a DL of larry's guide. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TJLR6QVT ,which i believe i followed exactly (my wii functions as it should anyway). i can check on the priiloader thing, but first what happens when it comes on? do i get out of it by just holding the power button? i believe the trucha bug was installed during larry's guide, however, my wii being only a month old i wouldn't be able to run the fakesign disc would i? what is cIOSCORP? you say its for booting discs, but that wouldn't work with the new drive would it? thanks already for the help.

Larry's guide doesn't appear to have instructions to install priiloader, which means you won't have installed priiloader. You should install it right away. Go to this site for instructions, under step 7:
http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs...ny-4-2-wii.html

cIOSCORP is a pack that duplicates ALL of your IOS & makes them cIOS. One of these benefits is being able to autoboot discs. As long as you have priiloader & bootmii as boot2 installed, you shouldn't need this.

Age is not a issue with the wii, try running one of the discs from this page: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=123708

If one of these boots you can boot custom discs which is a huge advantage.

But really, if you have priiloader &/or bootmii as boot2 installed you're pretty much covered.

yea, i didn't remember doing anything with priiloader, i'll set that up today. i wasn't able to install bootmii as boot2 when i did the mods for whatever reason, and just installed it as an IOS following larry's direction. i noticed that the softmod link you posted doesn't reccomend having installed bootmii as an IOS. is there anything i can do about that? is it alright to redo the nand backup? i did my softmod at my sister's place cause my net connection was shaky, and all the files from the SD are on her computer. if i can just redo the backup it would be easier for me, unless there weren't any files i needed, having bootmii being installed as IOS. thanks alot for the help thus far! sounds like i might be under protected.

edit: priiloader is now installed

At wiihacks, they always recommend that bootmii as boot2 should be installed in case you ever brick. Bootmii as an IOS apparently can't restore your NAND, I don't know why this is, though. If you should ever accidentally delete your system menu & IOS, no software (discs) can be run, so you have to rely on external brick protection, bootmii as boot 2 & priiloader.

Under no circumstances restore your NAND with bootmii as IOS. You will brick!

NO ALWAYS add bootmii - if it was no use they would not offer it as an IOS

The reason Bootmii as an IOS is not as good - you need some way of getting to bootmii, when it is boot2 - if the system menu cannot start (a full brick) then it can still start bootmii as a second boot option.

Bootmii as an IOS is started by priiloader, this program is at the front end of your system menu (hence no system menu - no priiloader - no bootmii)

You CAN use the nand recovery with bootmii as an IOS - it is more dangerous as once it starts - if it fails - goodbye Wii, if its boot2 then you just try again. So only use it if there is no other option.

Bootmii as IOS is more prone to failure, & if it does, you will brick. Only if you have priiloader is installed will it be recoverable, but priiloader usually is erased when you restore your NAND, so bootmii as an IOS really is quite stupid & useless.

Bootmii as IOS is more prone to failure - poor statement Bootmii as an IOS is perfectly stable, I think you are talking only about the NAND restore, this again WAS hit and miss but is now reliable as long as you take the necessary precautions. I have restored nand on my wii (twice - the second time through a stupid mistake) It restored correctly and got the Wii fully working again.

Only if you have priiloader is installed will it be recoverable - yup that is what my last post detailed (AND why!)

so bootmii as an IOS really is quite stupid & useless. - wrong, why are you advising people to do something against the best advise from the people who devised the hacks and those that wrote the guides. It is a last resort but it can work so not stupid or useless

And now we see why bootmii as an IOS is so heavily debated among the modders, & most people don't know whether to install it or not, because so many different people say so many different things.

ok, so i have priiloader installed, and i had set bootmii as an IOS when i first did my mod. that's about the best i can do at this point correct? also, when i set bootmii as an IOS, was there any data put onto the SD from that process? if so, i'll need to grab it off of my sister's computer next time i see her. thanks alot for the help

edit: just curious, why can't all wiis do bootmii as boot2?

For extra security you could enable a few priiloader hacks like "block disc & online updates" or "Autoboot: System Menu".

Most wiis can have bootmii as boot2 installed, but when they update to 4.2, Nintendo have erased it a put their own boot2 in it's place, making it impossible to install it back there. Some wiis in a few cases can have bootmii as boot2 on 4.2, I softmodded my friend's 4.2 wii & sucessfully installed bootmii as boot2, but his wii was a launch(2007) wii.

i understand, damn nintendo. i did block the updates and set priiloader to autoboot system menu. thanks alot for all the help, it feels better having a couple of safety nets in place.

one last question. i was visiting my sister today, and i copied the files from my softmod onto a thumbdrive, and i noticed that i had a 500+ mb nand.bin file. am i right in assuming that bootmii was able to save as boot2 in order for me to have this file? or is this file still created when bootmii is saved as an IOS? thanks

This file (together with the keys.bin) is you backup. Bootmii can create this no matter how it is installed (ios or boot2)
