I will be sending my 12 year old niece who lives out of state a Wii with updated mods. It is about 3 years old and currently has a wiikey chip. It doesnt play the game back-ups for some reason anymore so I was going to either softmod it or put a new chip (not sure which chip??) in it. I want to go the route that will be easier for her and her parents to operate and not screw it up by updating f/w or accessing sensitive homebrew options.
I am familiar with the options bootmii and priiloader offer since they are on my Wii which has an argon chip but I dont have any experience with the usability differences between chipped and softmodded Wii's and which one is harder to screw up to the point of no return. Any suggestion are appreciated.

well, you can install everything needed, then remove HBC. that will prevent any tampering with wads and such. then have priiloader block disc and online updates.
the only problem is with usb loaders. with configurable usb loader, it's easy to change the settings by just pressing 1. or deletion of games by pressing -, but it will make you confirm first. just instruct them to just point to the game cover and press A.
and forget modchips. not worth it anymore. remove it, and softmod it.
ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure
got a whole lot more to list . . .

If you format the drive NTFS then they can't add or remove games via the wii. But they can still tinker with settings.

I personally use wiiflow
and priiloader
have priiloader autoboot wiiflow and then they cant mess with anything until they enter the password for wiiflow
they dont even see the wii settings screen
if they want to change games they just turn it off with the wii remote and then turn it back on and pick a new game
my kids are 2 and 5 and they both can use the wii without problems

what if they want to use the shop channel, or play wiiware games, or use emulators? you basically locked them out from the original menu.

the problem with that is games must be installed from the computer then. and if you don't have the LG drive, you're pretty much screwed (and i'm sure the parents don't want the risk of getting caught from downloading).
my concept of modding is: have the system look and feel completely normal, but have the advanced features hidden. and with channel forwarders, all that you need is a properly configured hard drive. even if you take away the hard drive, you can still use original discs with the disc channel.
configurable usb loader is my choice, but with easy access to options, either wiiflow or usbloaderGX is probably the best best.

to get back to the system menu all you have to do is press the home button
then click the sd card for all the wiiware (but they dont usually want to play those games anyways)
and if they do then they ask
not really locked out
and why would you want kids/idiots in the shop channel and system menu
they just want to play their games
turn it on and pick a game dosent get much easier for them than that

Thanks for the discussion and suggestions. The only thing I want them to be able to do is play the games. The kids aren't really aware of the other features of the Wii. Since this Wii is older and has a capable drive to read back-up disks, I want to stay on that route. Also with HDD's and kids and clueless parents, they wont have a good idea of how sensitive a hard drive is to rough handling and slight impacts. Since they live out of state, I wont be there on a regular enough basis to check on things. Sounds like removing HBC and getting wiiflow and priiloader is what I need though.
My 5 year old son's grandmother just got him Wii for Christmas today to keep at her house so he can play when he is over there. The serial number is LU75243809. From poking around on several sites, seems like this model will most likely have a DVD drive that cant read back-ups. Are there any sites that can tell you from the serial number what mod options are available??? If this is true, I will most likely mimic GreenWii's setup with a HDD and lock him out of everything. His mom is over there almost everyday so I wont have to worry too much about the HDD.

If worried about the hard drive have a 2.5 portable drive and velcro it to the side of the Wii (never had a problem with mine even after it came down the stairs in the arms of a falling child).
