Finished soft modding my 4.2 Wii.

The kids put in an original copy of New SMB.Wii. They loaded it through the Disc channel and hit update the Wii. I looked at the SysMenu and it still says 4.2, it did not "downgrade" it back to 4.1.

My HBC still works fine, but I have not tried to play a backup game yet, and want to know if I "updated" any of my soft modded files?

I think that the update you ran was just a minor patch and shouldn't have modified any of your cIOS's. Quickest way to check though is to try starting your usb loader. If it works then great, nothing was changed. If not then you need to reinstall them.

Can I just install USB loader and see if the app runs? I don't have an external HD for the Wii yet, so no backups to "test" yet.

I figure since we made this mistake I should install Priiloader, which I did not do.

Also I have a quick question in regards to GameCube video games.

I understand they can not be played from an external HD, so they must be played via disc.

However my Wii is fairly new. Not sure on the exact manufacture date, but it was purchased for Christmas. It is my understanding that the drives installed in these new Wii's will not read any recordable media.

So does that mean we can not play backup GameCube games?

I did install DVDx at the beginning of the soft mode process and I can not get a DVD-R movie to play.

I need to apologize. I misread your first comment. I thought that you had said something about a USB loader but you did not. Sorry about that.

Anyway, the CFG USB loader will start even without proper cIOS's installed, but without a usb drive attached you cant tell if it is working.

Almost any old flash drive will work though, even one as small as 512mb can be used to play NSMB and test things that way. If you don't have one of them laying around, then find the 'config.txt' file in the usb-loader folder on your SD card and change the 'device = usb' line to 'device = sd' and it will read from the SD card instead. (SD must be formatted FAT32 for this to work)

Priiloader cannot be installed on newer wiis, so that's not really an option for you.

Unfortunately, you are correct about the gamecube games. You wii will not likely be able to play them until either a hack re-enables the ability to read burned disks or the USB loader adds the ability to play gamecube games.

And DVDX doesn't play movies. It is a program that runs in the background of the wii and lets various homebrew programs access the DVD drive. To watch a movie you need a media player. There are several available on wiibrew.org, but I warn you that the quality you will get watching movies on the wii is lower than that of even a cheapo DVD player.

Thanks for the info, as a shortcut. I can load ROMS and play them via USB jumpdrive through the emulators, is that the same thing?
