Hey I had a wiikey chip installed on my Wii last year by some guy from an online classified ad. Since then my Wii has been acting funny with alot of Disk Drive dysfunction. So i'm wondering if he took my original drive.

Recently I found a site for someone doing repairs and mods of all kinds which looked much more professional than the first guy..one of the things he sais in his add is " I do the work right in front of you, no drive swapping". Which sugests that swapping out the original drive is something thats been going on that I was unaware of.

Is this something you've heard of before? I know this is the sort of risk you take when you do this sort of thing. But having never seen my original drive to begin with my question is how can I tell if I have my original disk drive...

I haven't yet decided if I'm going to open up my Wii on my own (I have to research the screwdrivers and the soldering) or if i'll go to this other guy I mentioned above who'll do the work with me there, but either way I need to know what my original DD is supposed look like
and/or what a swapped one might be. Any photos available or labels to look for?

I had a Wii that was bought on launch day, the serial code on the back reads: LU10344683 5. I'd like the same drive I had at that time.

+Have the parts of the Wii changed allot since launch ?
+ IF my DD has been swapped can I find a replacement Drive of the exact same make?

thank you very much for your time

I doubt he swapped the drive out because theres no reason to do so. If you had a launch wii then it was the easiest to mod. So he probably wouldn't have put a later drive in it that was more difficult to mod.

Even if he did though, Wii DVD drives can be swapped between all chipsets and regions with no problems. My wii is a fairly recent model that originally came with a drive with the black epoxy on it. I swapped it with a launch wii's DMS drive. No problems.

Thanks for the drive label, I searched for 'DMS' to do some homework.

I found this site where they give you your version based on your code

http://www.wiidrives.com/list.

It says my "There is a 100% chance the chipset is GC2-DMS."

Looking around for sites that might sell this drive, to get a photo I noticed some people refer to the DMS and D2A in the same sentence...as if they where the same model:

"Get your hands on the DMS D2A complete replacement drive now!"

"DVD-Rom Drive for Wii *Refurbished* (Dms) D2C version "

It makes it sound like there is a D2C version of the DMS drive. Is this a screw up on their part or are there variations of the DMS drive?

just checking to be sure before I spend money.
