my drive is shot, wondering if I could install usb loader and use it for wii games instead?
Never messed with my wii to much, it is mainly for my kids, please forgive me if it is a stupid question.
Fair question man. It's actually the whole reason I attempted loading from USB. I also had my drive fail. Now I just use WBFS manager to load my backups straight from iso right to the external USB hard drive.
So to answer your question directly , No, you don't need a working disc drive to use USB backup. I'm not sure I'd use the disc drive anyway to run backups anymore if it did actually still work. The only thing you would use a working disc drive would be to dump straight to the external drive using your wii. That would definitely still be easier but once you get the hang of loading from your PC you'll find it pretty straight forward as well.
My kids now don't ever bug me anymore to keep re-burning discs over and over every time they scratch the hell out of one. I love it! They just fire it up, with bootmii I've got it loading directly into the USB launcher. The kids are presented with a menu with nice 3d graphical icons for all the games or they can quickly pick them from a scrolling text list. It's always locked if you leave the settings at default so that your kids can't delete games or mess with the launch settings for any of them. You can customize launch settings for each game so that say for instance you want to load a PAL game on your NTSC tv. No sweat, unlock your settings with password, pick that game and select the settings and set it to autopatch. All done, your kids never know the difference. They just see a nice picture of the game and they point and click and the game is on the screen.
Anyway, look in the stickies for one of Larry's guides and you can't go wrong. Good stuff!
*edit*
I just looked and realized how many guides are in the stickies now. Here, this is the one you want
in theory, do I even need the disc drive in my my wii. I have a buddy who wants it and if usbloader wii work without it even in, I have no problem giving it to him.

true. I was just letting you know it was an easier fix then I at first thought. Also it would be nice to be able to rip them right to the drive through the loader....hellllllo gamefly.

I here ya. Thats the only downside, taking the external drive up and down the stairs to load games. It would be sweet to be able to just drop the disc in and rip straight to the hdd.
