Long story short:
-- My NTSC Wii is a couple of years old and was softmodded nearly the whole time.
-- It played backups fine from any region (only had a couple of PAL), burned on Matrix brand DVD-R
-- I tried upgrading Backup Launcher, CIOS, etc. to get a newer game to work (I think it was Ghostbusters).
-- My backups immediately stopped working, with the sole exception of Mario Kart NTSC, burned on a newer batch of Matrix DVD-R. Guitar Hero World Tour NTSC was burned on to the same type of disc, same program, same burner, but did not worked (but it did work before on the old disc before the updates).
-- It became more trouble than it was worth to me to softmod so I installed a drivekey yesterday.
-- I also went bananas and formatted the memory card because I didn't care much about losing game saves and whatnot and I was hoping it would reset the firmware, get rid of CIOS I installed, etc.
-- Instead of resetting the firmware to whatever it came with, I'm now on 4.2U.
-- I've tried the following but I still can't get any backups (again, most of which are NTSC) but Mario Kart NTSC to work. (Wii Fit is my sole original game and it works fine.)
-- Switched from Matrix DVD-R burnt with Nero to Verbatim DVD-R burnt with ImgBurn
-- Used a Wii DVD lens cleaner twice
I'm sorry for the long message but I wanted to be clear about what I've tried so far. I'm out of ideas now and really I don't understand what makes Mario Kart special. Please let me what I'm missing, what else I can try, or if you need more info.
Thanks very much in advance.

To clarify, Wii Fit is the only original game I have WITH me. I lent out the rest to family since I had them backed up.

Thanks for the response. I'm not concerned with PAL games, however. My region is NTSC and I can no longer get NTSC backups to work, except for Mario Kart, no matter what media or game I use (older or newer).

Additionally, the backups that I'm trying to load appear to be unscrubbed.

I don't know much about hardmods. Perhaps, an update of your chip is in order? No pressure, but I would still consider softmodding my system if I were you. It can give you that extra compatibility with backups. Just out of curiosity what games are problematic? What error(s) are you getting?

Evey backup I have except Mario Kart is a problem. Here's a partial list, all NTSC, which worked at one time, tested using both Matrix + Nero AND Verbatim + ImgBurn to no avail:
Guitar Hero World Tour
Wii Sports
Gold's Gym Cardio Workout
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
Agatha Christie - And Then There Were None
Super Mario Galaxy
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Wii Fit (the original works fine)
Wii Family Play
What exactly is it about Mario Kart that makes it an exception?

I should also make it clear that Mario Kart was also the only game working before I installed the Drivekey, when I was using only softmods. So basically, I installed the Drivekey, reformatted and I'm exactly where I was before the Drivekey installation.

Just for clarification, are you running these games via the disc channel or through a backup launcher?

Neither. The Drivekey uses a direct boot. Prior to the DirectKey, I used Gamma successfully for about a year.

What cIOS did you update to?

cIOS249-IOS36-rev07
Should reformatting the system memory have gotten rid of that?

No. Reformatting the system memory would've gotten rid of all VC and Wiiware, but not IOS249. By the way, the most current release of IOS249 is cIOS38 Rev17--the version you should've updated to. Given that you've updated to 4.2, your Wii is no longer softmodded. Re-accomplish the mod using the link I've provided above. If you get stumped along the way just ask questions there.

I'd really like to avoid softmodding if I can. Is that the only way to restore the Wii to its original factory state? If so, once it can run Homebrew, are there some exact directions for restoring everything to their factory defaults?

It is rather simple to softmod, and you will receive heaps of help. If you are hesitant to do it, then perhaps you shouldn't. I hope somebody that knows more about hardmods can chime in. By the way, the problem isn't restoring your Wii to its factory settings either.

So what do you think is the problem? What account for only the Mario Kart backup working and nothing else, both before and after the Drivekey?

I guess I'm also not really clear on what softmodding again would accomplish. If my backups didn't work before I installed the Drivekey, what would I be setting up differently to make sure they work now?

You never did mention what error(s), if any, you were receiving when booting the problematic backups. At any rate, my hunch is you ran a very outdated version of cIOS249. With the 4.2 firmware softmod, you can once again play those games you were having trouble with. Apart from cIOS249, the guide also walks you through the installation of cIOS222. The latter resolves playback issues with most musical games. Also, there is also a link to the installation of Priiloader. Priiloader can enable several system menu hacks to include region-free Wiiwares and such. The most dynamic advantage of softmod is the loading of ISOs via a USB hard drive. Why? For one, it is cost-effective. And two, most backed up games that are usually problematic are more often than not playable when loaded through a USB loader.

The error: When I place a back disc in the drive, instead of recognizing the game, it just keeps spinning. When I click on the game channel, it shows the discs spinning and eventually results in a question mark on the screen stating that the game wasn't recognized and should be ejected. That's as far as I get with anything other than Mario Kart.
Can you estimate how long it would take to install all the Homebrew you recommend? Also, do you think Mario Kart still works because it's an older game that doesn't try to use the errant CIOS?

I'm with you on this one I think. My older NTSC Wii was playing backup NTSC games just fine with the original Drivekey and 4.2u...until now. Only our original games work now.
We haven't checked in a couple of weeks, but I figure this must have happened in the last few days.
Did Ninty do a push update that killed the chip?
Anyone have this problem with the new Drivekey and 4.2u?

I'm having problems with a wii that won't play any backed up games with a DriveKey installed. 4.2u installed. Tried 2 different DriveKey chips.
Anyone run into that problem??

More info:
Wii S/n LU726XXXXX
The chip on the MB is approx 3/4" square with no information on it at all.
From the drivechip database, this comes up as a 50% chance it is a GC2-D3-2 (v2) "with no drive chip".
Am I out of luck here?

I'm no expert but i would say the problem is with your disc drive. You can try switching out your lense to see if that helps. There is always the option to softmod...

1st does regular games play? if so make sure the settings are correct on the chip, second make sure the games you are trying to play(backups) are from your region. 4.2 makes the wii region locked.
