AFAIK, the majority of modchips available for the Wii will let you update fine.
Why not just Softmod for free following the guides on here, so long as you use brick blocker on all of your ISO's and use same region games your Wii wont get bricked.
all of it. Follow the guide step by step and dont skip any of the steps. WHen you are done, follow the other guide at the bottom of the guide linked in above and do the run backups from the disc channel.
When you are done, you will be able to load backup games from the disc channel.
If you only follow the guide linked above, and you skip the guide on how to run backups from the disc channel, you will have load all your backups from the neo gamme backup launcher. This launcher is installed for you if you follow the guide linked above.
I have followed that guide 3 times so far. Twice on Wii's with mod chips and once on a virgin wii with no mod chip and it worked like a charm all three times.
The guide will link you to all the files you will need. The twilight hack is old. The new hack is the bannerbomb exploit and this hack does not require a game to load it up. all you need is the file the guide links you to, an SD card, and a wifi connection with your Wii.

if the pal games will load you are safe playing them. I usually stay away from pal but knock yourself out. Just make sure to NEVER update from a disc if it is pal.
Brick Blocker i believe is something that you run your backup iso's through before burning them. It removes any updates that may be on the disc. I dont use this so i can't say how to use but I am sure it is very basic. Just search for it here at afterdawn using the search bar at the top of the page.
Updating with a pal disc on a ntsc system or vice versa only semi bricks the system. There is a way to correct but it is a pain. Just be careful updating with discs you download, especially if you know they are pal, and you should be just fine.
