Please forgive me if this question has been answered a million times already. I have looked, but am confused at this point, to put it mildly. Confused and nervous that proceeding without caution will brick my kids Wii.
My kids have had a Wii for a year now and have only had 2 games. Wii Sports and Mario Cart. The Wii is stand alone, i.e., not connected to the internet. So I'm guessing it's firmware is seriously dated.
I installed a DriveKey that I purchased about a 3 weeks ago.
Burned an .iso and it worked no problem. However, upon insertion of the backed up game, it said my Wii required an update to play the game. I wasn't sure if I should say yes, but did. I would assume this was a firmware update?
How does this work with the "import" feature on the drivekey? If I say yes when the game prompts for update, it is overriding the import feature, correct?
Since the Wii is stand alone, I'm assuming it won't get the 4.2 firmware I see so many threads about?
I just want to know what to tell my kids when they see that message "This game requires an update..if you have a modchip, it may break your Wii" from legit games and/or back ups.
My guess is that since my drive key is from November, it will handle any game update that isn't BRAND new.
It is safe to update with modchips so long as it is not an import game. The warning message is mostly there to scare you, but updating from an import game can negatively effect the wii.
The newest firmware, 4.2, blocks the ability to play import games (homebrew programs can restore that ability) but not the ability to play backup games from your wii's home region.
Long story short: Stick to games from your wii's home region and you should be fine.
