ok i have been looking for a solution for the mother-inlaws wii so they can play backups, without any fuss, just put in game and play.

virgin wii
sys ver 4.0e
LAH-1171xxxx --> probably new D3/D2nothing V2 chip

read this on a mod supply site

"for people that have bought consoles after Aug 09 that would have the D3-2 drives, currently there is no chip that will allow these D3-2 drives to load backup disks at all"

modchip solutions for this are
WODE Jukebox -> load from hdd only, load from backup disc wont work on D3-2.
FlatMii -> requires PC next to wii to load ISO from.
WiiKey Fusion-> only load backups from SD card on the D3-2 drive (other drives ok for backup disc)
DriveKey -> will work for D3/D2-Nothing V1. but wont work for D3/D2-Nothing V2 (D3-2).

1. has anyone tried any of these new mods with the D3/D2-Nothing v2 drive?

Now as with most In-Laws they are picky,and totally NOT technologically minded, they dont want to load games from PC, or HDD or SD card, they are determined to load from DVD Disc. they dont even have a Wifi net connection. (talk about stuck in the past)

So that leaves me with a softmod. i have read the latest softmod thread. but just a few questions.

2. what would happen to the soft-modded wii if the inlaws were dumb enough to accidentally update to the new 4.2e system version. would it be bricked? or just run the 4.2 system version and lose the ability to play backups?

3. if they put in a genuine game with a higher sys version on it then the softmodded 4.0e. will the game ask to update to the newer version? or will the softmod bypass the system version check? cos if a screen comes up saying to update to a higher system version they will b dumb enough to do it.

and when it comes to installing the softmod

4. is bootmii necessary, and what is the point of it.

5. is a wifi connection necessary to install this softmod (not counting the 'extra steps')

6. is DOP-IOS necessary, and does it use the wifi to work.

thanks in advance, slowly getting my head around all the new stuff thats happened in this scene since i modded my wii almost a year ago.

1. Not me
2. They can not accidently update if they have no wifi
3. Use preloader to skip disc updates, no updates will ever happen.
4. Bootmii is always recommended IMHO, a copy of your NAND can only be a good thing.
5. Nope, all files can be taken from a pc onto the sd card.
6. Not had anything to do with this so I cannot answer sorry.

Hope that was some help.

If your going to softmod their system I would recommend bringing it to a place that has WiFi just to install the sections that need WiFi (DOP-IOS needs WiFi).

But even if they have one of the systems that has the drive that will not play backups it will not play either for a softmod. They will need to use a USB HDD and USB loader to run their games.

By the way there is a softmod guide in my sig.

Crap........

its a LAH-117 so chances are its a D3/D2-Nothing Drive. in which case no hardware mod (apart from emulators) will play burnt discs.

i was hoping a softmod would still allow that.

so i guess they r stuck with a mod like wiikey fusion or WODE so they can load game off a SD card or USB.

or softmod the system and use a USB loader to get th games off a HDD.

btw i throughly read ur guide Larrylje, its great :-)

well i will let the inlaws know this, they may go for a softmod & usb loader or wait a bit longer, usually 3-6 months after a new drive is released there is a new workround for it.

thanx guys.
