Hi, I could not find a guide or thread on this topic so I thought I would try my luck here.

I have a wii with a sunkey hard mod that I bought. This is as much as I know about it except I was told it would play all region games (PAL and NTSC)and 'burnt' games. (I am in a PAL region)

My first attempts at downloading games (Super Mario Bros) and then burning them to disk resulted in unplayable games.

My next attempts with some more research ended up with me downloading F1 rar's and then extracting to iso. I then used an iso patch (entered a number shown) and it told me it was successfully patched. I then used wiiur and it then told me it was successful. I burnt the game with imageburn and woo who it worked. I was actually feeling pretty pleased with myself.

Flush with success I downloaded Jurassic The Hunted USA Wii-BiOSHOCK. I then followed the same process of using the iso patcher and wiiur and all went well. I then burnt it and went to play it but the initial screen came up and then went blank. Nothing, it won't work. I then tried another couple of times and ended up with some more coasters (Verbatim DVD-R).

I have since read so much about all of this that I am totally confused. I have limited knowledge on all of this, pretty evident from my thread and I was hoping someone could explain what went wrong or how to do this process properly. BTW the game I downloaded Jurassic the Hunted came in rar files and then I extracted it into a single iso, it did not ask me to update when I tried it first and it had no other files with it.

Thanks for listening and if you cna assist that would be great.

Ok, you've got a couple potential problems.

1) You're trying to play games from a region that doesn't match your wii. Sometimes this works, sometimes it just doesn't. I'm not going to spend pages describing all the potential issues from doing this, just suggest that, for simplicity's sake, stick to PAL games for now. Once you've gotten that down, we can work on running games from other regions.

2) You are patching and brickblocking the games. Brickblocking is good when using games from different regions, as it keeps them from trying to install updates that could harm your wii. But most games require updates and if you block them all then you arent going to be able to play them.

Try using UNPATCHED PAL games and let them update.

The updates cannot hurt your modchip or your wii so long as they are from games from your wii's home region.

Thanks Penguin, but how do I know if they are unpatched or not....I just use a usernet and search for games I see on RSL log or scene release, so I can't tell if they are unpatched.

If I do get an unpatched one (PAL) then do I run the isopatcher and wiiur program to get them to work?.

thanks

Scene releases are usually not patched. They will generally release clean ISOs.

And you dont need any of those patcher programs if you have a clean PAL ISO. Just burn it and play it.

penguin98, you may be onto something there....I just checked the F1 release I downloaded and it was a PAL. It still worked when I patched it and 'scrubbed it'. Jurassic The Hunted is a USA game. I sued the USA games as I believed that the hardmod made them region free but that might only refer to being able to play original overseas games?.

I did try a New Super Mario PAL game but have since heard that there are extra issues with that game besides having a clean iso.

Any other suggestions or hints?. I will try another PAL iso soon and hopefully things will go as you said. I also plan to softmod the Wii soon as well so that should help again. I jsut don't want to brick it...:(

Alright, here's just a couple of the problems that can come up when using out of region games.

1) Though your modchip should include region override, many chips have that turned off by default to keep people from updating with an out-of-region game and screwing up their wii.

The fix for this would be finding out HOW your chip turns the region override on and off and turning it on. I've never heard of a sunkey, so I have no idea how that would be. Some chips use a config disk, others use a physical jumper on the chip itself.

2) Even if region override is turned on it doesn't change the video output settings. PAL and NTSC signals run at different framerates. Some TV's can handle either signal. Others cannot and will have flickering screens, black and white picture, or no picture at all. Usually in this case there is still sound, but not always, it depends on the TV.

The fix here is to install homebrew channel and run the game through neogamma. In neogamma you can set it to force PAL video output.

3) Many games contain game-specific firmware patches. When you brickblock it removes these patches and without them the game cannot run.

The simplest way to fix this is to just get clean, unscrubbed, unpatched PAL games and burn them without modifying them in any way. Then let them run their updates.

Alternatively, you could find out what IOS patches the games need and install them with the wad manager on homebrew channel, but I don't really recommend this. If you get the wrong ones it can brick the wii. I killed my first wii trying to do this.

4) Some games, for seemingly no reason, simply cannot be run on different region wii's. Twilight princess is one, as is pikmin 2 new play control. There are others as well but I don't know them off the top of my head.

There's really no fix for this other than waiting for and getting the proper region release.

There are other potential issues as well. It's for these reasons that I recommend just using games from your wii's home region. Its just simpler that way.

And you're right that NSMB has some extra issues involved. It will crash randomly during gameplay due to new copy protection.

There are 3 ways around it:

1) Patch the game. There is a hacked dol file online that you can use wiiscrubber to replace one of the filed on the disk with. Once you burn that patched copy (or just find and download a pre-patched disk) it should work fine.

Some people have other issues with the patched disk, but I'm not going to go into that.

2) Boot the game through the newest version of neogamma. That will bypass the copy protection.

3) Use a USB loader to install and play the game from a USB drive or the wii's SD card. The game is only about 350mb once all the padding is removed so you dont need a large one to do it.

penguin98, thanks again for the info it has been very helpful.

I just have one query about the PAL game F1 that I got to work. I patched it and scrubbed it and it still worked, is that normal or would it have worked without doing that anyway?.

I will stick to PAL game snow after you mention about 'bricking' and problems. Hopefully a softmod will prevent that even if I get an NTSC and it updates......lot to learn. Just on a more personal note, I have been to many forums about modding and Wii's lately and so far this has been the best for info and the most courteous..thanks to you....will stick here from now on.

Have a happy and safe Xmas.

Oh, sorry. I missed the question.

The PAL game you got to work would have worked without doing anything to it. Patching and scrubbing remove the updates and junk padding data. Your wii probably already had all the updates included on the disk, and the padding data is not necessary for the game anyway. Scrubbing replaces the padding with different padding that will compress well and make it easier to to share the file online.
