Thanks for the suggestion, but no dice. Exactly the same result: timeout after 30 secs/tries, and ERROR! [ret = -1]

Firmware is v4.2U, if that matters in this situation.

Thanks for any further help...great guides, by the way!

Hey Larry,

If there's no other obvious troubleshooting to try or problem that may exist, would you recommend I try the whole softmod process again from the start? Anything specific to do before starting?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for any further help...great guides, by the way!

Thank you for this great guide! At first I thought it was going to be very complex with a 99% chance of exploding my Wii, but I made it through thanks to your clear and concise guide.

However, I have come across a strange problem. I arrived all the way to the step to update my titles.txt, but it has been running for a long while now. I use a Nintendo Wi-fi USB Connector dongle to connect my Nintendo hardware to the internet. Everything that required the use of the internet has been smooth so far(hermes, covers) and I am not running on dial-up anymore(thank God for that). The wi-fi tool shows there is network activity since the software for the dongle on my computer says the Wii is connected. So just how large is this titles.txt file anyway? This is the text that shows on the CFG USB Loader download screen:

FAT32 mount: sd USB-HDD
CFG base: usb:/usb-loader
Loader Version: 50-fat
IOS222 (Rev 4) [FAT]

Downloading titles.txt ...
http://wiitdb.com/titles.txt?LANG=EN
Saving: usb:/usb-loader/titles.txt

And it's been like that for atleast 30 minutes or so. Any idea?

Just manually turn off the system then start the USB loader again. If the titles.txt didn't download then just download it using the link you provided above. The titles.txt goes into the usb-loader folder on the USB Drive.

I'm having a similar problem, though I'm on 4.2. However, 4 out of 5 times when I run CFG USB Loader it just reboots my Wii thus going to the System Menu. When it does load properly it can't mount my HDD (confirmed to work by others).

I've tried going back through the CFG loader install, re-downloading files, re-formatting my HDD and finally going back through the entire softmod process...all to no avail.

Everything else I've done w/the softmod has worked perfectly - the softmod itself, homebrew apps, preloader, etc. CFG loader is the ONLY thing that's not working for me.

Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Only thought is to try USB Loader GX next, though I'd prefer to use CFG. If neither work at least that'd tell me if I need to get a different drive.

Sup Guys,

Im trying to soft mod by Nephews Wii he recently purchased, Serial #LU72223684-8 Version 4.1U. I used Larrylje tutorial which I used on mines previously and it worked fine. I tried sofmodding it to run back up Verbatim DVD-r but no luck. I kept getting read error 1101. After further research i found out that my nephews wii has the new GC2-D3-2 (v2) Chip which is unable to read DVD-r's. I attempted to install CFG USB Loader again using Larrylje's tutorial. However I followed the instructions twice to the letter, but am unable to get to this part;

Boot up CFG USB Loader.
Press 1 on the Wiimote.
Press 1 again to get to global settings.
Go down to DOWNLOAD ALL MISSING COVERS and Press A
After covers are downloaded go down to UPDATE TITLES.TXT and Press A
Reboot USB Loader after TITLES.TXT is downloaded.

When i load CFG Loader it doesnt do anything when i press 1. As if it doesnt recognize it.

when i attempted to load a game via usb, the usb loader times out after 30 seconds.

See Larry's suggestion above about disconnecting & reconnecting the USB HDD. Did that and same problem.

Yes, I've tried both USB ports multiple times. When plugged into the "inner" port CFG won't even make a mount attempt, but when plugged into the "outer" port it does - just won't mount.

I'm also discouraged that CFG appears to crash or something 90% of the time I try to load it...just reboots my Wii to Sys Menu.

I've searched everywhere. Wii works fine. File conversion to correct format ok.

I have a 8gb cruzer micro. (on compatability list as ok) it will not allow me to transfer the 4.37gb file.

Please help

To all having time out/compatibility issues with the CFG USB loader.

I can only give directions on how to softmod and install this USB loader.

There really isn't anything I can do if your USB devices are having compatibility issues. I would suggest looking in the compatibility list and see if your USB Device is listed and if there are notes that you need to read to get it to work properly. If you did look at the compatibility list then try Google search on your USB Device and see if anyone else has had issues.

If you converted the file properly it wouldn't be 4.37GB in size. read the IOS preparation section again.

larry is da man.
your guide is perfect, the only problem i had was because i couldnt read the screen, some of the software on the sd card show up horrible small and fuzzy. if it wasnt for that i would of got it done a lot quicker.

my hard drive is a maxtor onetouch 500gig, ive ripped 3 of my games to it, updated the covers/titles without trouble.

ive loaded them/played them thru the CFG usb loader program, is that what i should be doing? what is the neo gamma thing thats installed on there for?

also was wondering what wii backup manager is exactly for? if you rip them off the wii directly to the hd, is that for takin them off the hd and puttin them on a dvd-r?

totally appreciate your guides and the time you put into them to help everyone else.

thanks

again another great guide thank you worked a treat.

got it all installed everything ok. and it will play from the usb stick and from a backup disk so i know it all works.

only thing is when i go to copy from the wii to the usb it just seems to sit at the same screen saying copying please wait for ages.

was that working or did it freeze, as i had to turn my wii off and there was nothing on the usb stick.

Is the Wii ISO preparation really necessary? Luckily I had one game (ISO) to put on there. However, I am now ripping games from the Wii disk drive to the external hard drive with great success!

Thanks for the guide! I know it takes a lot of time for you to write this up and answer questions here, and I just want you to know I really appreciate it. I'm just an average Joe with two kids who got this thing for Christmas. Without guides like this, i would be completely lost.

Follwed this guide and got it working.

If you are getting th blank screen (like me) after loading the usb channel, try a different thumb drive. Swapped it out after trying all day...and BOOM loaded super mario Bros.

If it is an IOS then yes. If your just ripping games from DVD drive to USB Device rhen there is no need to do the step becuase CFG does it for you.

Hey Guys! First Off, Great Guide. I for one appreciatte the effort. Took some monkeying around with my HDD but I got it working.

For those of you having problems getting it to work (rebooting). I had the same issue. It loaded the first time, but said I had the HDD in the wrong slot. I put it in the right slot and it would just dump back to the wii menu. It would only start the Loader if I had it in the wrong USB slot. To fix it, I let it load with the USB drive in the wrong slot then when it came up i plugged the drive into the right slot and it worked everytime since. Just and FYI. This is with a 1TB Iomega external HDD on the compatible list. You should try that.

The only thing left to conquer for me is to get the covers. Mine hangs on initializng network.

I'm having a strange problem. I followed the guide and everything was working fine last night. Today I came home from work to play and now when I start the usb loader it goes to a black screen for about 10 seconds and the wii restarts. I tried uninstalling the looad with the wad installer then reinstalling and it's giving me the same problem. I also tried simply unplugging the usb drive and that didn't help.

Any other ideas for me to try? It worked flawlessly last night, the only I did was turn off the wii.

Edit: That was weird. I tried restarting 2 more times and didn't have luck. So I put in a backed up DVD, started it with the loader, exited, then started the usb loader and it worked. So I don't know what the issue was. I hope it was just a one time quirk.
