i know it has to be external and externally powered and format to WBFS does it matter if it ata, sata etc i have an 80 GB ata hard drive i can get a caddy for thats powered externally, would this work formatted with WBFS or only certain hard drives that work with usb loaders.

I didn't completely understand your post, but read this.

It needs to be an EXTERNAL HDD, which means it's powered by one, and only one USB cable, which goes in the Wii. It doesn't matter if it's ATA or SATA, it just needs to be powered from a USB cable. There is no promise that it will work, since it's not a proper external HDD. I would recommend buying a Western Digital PassportHDD, since they have the most compatibility, and they're pretty cheap. I got a 160GB version, divided it into two partitions, one formatted to FAT32, the other to WBFS, and am using for backuping games but also for other logical stuff.

Once again, it needs to be powere only by USB, nothing else. Hope this helped.

The Hard drive doesn't need to be powered by the USB. I didn't like the idea of my wii powering my hard drive, so I got one that has its own power plug.

what GB and connections on the hard drive is it sata, pata or other?
