So here's the deal. I have a launch wii, hardmodded with a launch wiikey. Wii is at v4.1U, wiikey is 1.9x. My wife wants to play this new Mysims Skyheroes game, but when I insert the disc it's calling for an update. I've read up and see people have had problems with 4.3U, and I'm hesitant to go too far into updating, as I don't want to brick the unit. I haven't done any wii hacking in a long time, and I got through about as far as installing hackmii 0.8 and getting HBC installed. What else do I have to do to get this stupid game running? I'm not clear on how to do all that much, and I read somewhere that softmod procedures are not the same as hardmods. Do I do a regular update to 4.3U through wii system update? Is there a patched one I need to install instead?

You could just do the normal update, however system firmware versions 4.2 & 4.3 affect modchips by taking away the out-of-region capability, meaning you can only play backups in your region. If we knew the IOS the game needs to run you could just install that using WAD Manager & it would run no problems, but we don't know it.

I think there are some instructions on finding out the IOS of games on this page, the page has a list of games & what their menu updates are & what IOS they need: http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs...es-use-run.html

So assuming I don't care about playing out of region games, I can do the regular update and not mess anything up? HBC will still work, etc? I heard 4.3 screws up homebrew, but is that only for consoles that don't already have it? The Hackmii version I installed is the latest one, and I installed bootmii as well, although when I try to use it it hangs the system...not sure I'm using it right.

System firmware versions 4.2 & 4.3 will erase all softmods, but you can re-softmod your wii after the update by using a 4.2 or 4.3 softmod guide. If you don't care about not being alble to play out-of-region games you won't need Homebrew, but it's always useful to have in case of bricking emergencies.

I don't know much about Wiikey, but before you update to 4.2 or 4.3, you should update your Wiikey to it's latest firmware, which I don't know but I think is either 1.9x or 1.9s. Hopefully you know and/or can find out yourself.

Wiikey is on the latest firmware, so I'm good there. It looks like I'm good to go, but one more question. What do I need bootmii for? The hackmii I got had the install package alongside the homebrew channel installer...do I need one for the other?

The Hackmii Installer installs The Homebrew Channel, Bootmii & DVDx. Bootmii is usually installed as Boot2 to backup & restore the NAND. 4.2 & 4.3 don't allow for boot2 installation of Bootmii, so you don't really need it unless you feel it's necessary to backup your NAND. Bootmii is also extremely good brick protection but if you softmod you can install Priiloader instead, equally good brick protection.

In summary, you cannot install Bootmii because your wii will be on 4.3, so you don't really have to worry about it. However if the softmod guide you are using for 4.3 says to install Bootmii as an IOS, you should.

Here is the WiiHacks edition of the 4.3 softmod guide: http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs...tmod-guide.html
