iv searched and read lots of stuff on here but im starting to think im stupid the more i read
i cant find anything that explains much about usb loaders what 1 is best and how to install and run them they more seem to be about the problems or old crap that is irrelevant

first things first i have just purchased a wii (2day) got a nice old version lah 102 and have installed home brew dvdx and boot mii as boot2 using banner bomb and this tutorial http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_setup

and have backed up my nand thru boot mii

how do i check my firmware i have checked it in bootmii is there any other ways b4 u install it... im running 3.1E
is there a preffered version?
where can i acquire it?

ok now i want to install a usb loader on there and try to back up my games what is the best usb loader? obviously every1 has different opinions

also i have downloaded a game to test and unrared it but its a daa file how would i convert that to iso or do i not need to...

what format do i need the hard drive in can it be ntfs or wesb?? is it or does it have to be fat?

and once its all installed do i need the sd card in there all the time?
or can i create a small partition on the hard drive and place the files that the sd card would have on there and run it from teh hard drive instead of the sd card

thanks in advance for your help hopefully i have explained myself properly

You have a whole lot going on here. I'm going to just go through it line by line.

If you're running 3.1 then that could be why your games aren't working. If I recall, firmware 3.1 is about 2 years old now so many games made after it won't work.

You should update to firmware 4.1 or 4.2. Firmware 4.1 can be acquired by running the 4.1 upgrader program in the homebrew channel. You can get it here.

You can get 4.2 by doing a standard wii system update from the settings menu. You'll have to reinstall the homebrew channel afterward, but not DVDX or bootmii.

Note that both these methods require you to have the wii connected to the internet.

If you cant get the wii online somewhere then you need an original copy of a recent wii game. New super mario bros wii is a good option.

I recommend the configurable USB loader. It updates more frequently than others and has better compatibility. Get it here.

I've never seen a wii game in a daa file. You may have a bad download.

The hard drive can be NTFS, WBFS or FAT. Any are fine. WBFS is a custom filesystem designed just for wii usb loaders when they were first released. FAT and NTFS support were added later on.

If you use WBFS then use WBFS manager 3.0 to load disk ISOs on and off it from your PC. If you have a FAT filesystem then you can just drag and drop files onto it but you need to convert them to .wbfs files first. NTSC also uses .wbfs files and can actually handle standard .iso files. But you should convert them anyway because the iso files are generally much larger than their wbfs counterparts.

You can create a small partition (2 gigs should be more than enough) on your hard drive and format that to FAT and load all your SD card files onto it. The homebrew channel should automatically be able to read from there.

Are you getting the black screen when you try to load the USB loader or when you boot the games? If it is when you load USB loader then it is because of your wii's low firmware. USB loaders require custom firmware patches to work, but should at least start on a wii without them.

If it is when you try to load a game though then it could be either because of the low firmware, or because you are missing the required custom firmware patches. (Probably both reasons actually) If you only followed the one guide that you linked to then you are missing those patches.

How to get those patches depends on what firmware you choose to update to.

If you update to 4.1 then you can follow Larry's guide.

If you update to 4.2 then you can follow xzxero's guide His guide is shorter and simpler because it contains less information, though it actually has more steps because modding a 4.2 wii is a little more complex.

With either guide of course, you can skip any steps you've already taken, such as installing HBC, DVDX, Bootmii, NAND backup, exc.

If you're following either of the guides I linked you to then you should be getting the newest, or nearly the newest cIOS's and enough to play most games.

Updating the usb loader depends on how you installed it. If you installed it to the wii's internal memory then you need to delete the channel for it and install with a new wad. More likely though you would install a forwarder channel, which autoboots a homebrew program from the SD card without having to start the homebrew channel. In that case, or if you're simply running it through the homebrew channel, then you just need to replace the dol file.

And all USB loaders should support games from different regions. You just have to change the settings to make sure that video output matches your TV's region.
