Hi. If I sound stupid or have asked a question that has already been asked & answered, I'm sorry, you'll have to bear with me, I'm new at this. Anyway I just bought a new Nintendo Wii after my old one, which was a Korean Soft-modded region changed Wii, was automatically updated & received the dreaded: "Error 003: Unauthorized Device Detected". My new Wii is completely original, but since I have many backups already, I would like to install the Homebrew Channel, instead of getting it modded, however, I have heard that The Homebrew Channel can brick your Wii during system updates, & I have also heard the hard-mods(mod-chips) aren't detectable by system update, so my question would be: Which is less likely to brick the Wii? Modchips, or The Homebrew Channel?
Thanks in advance

I'm sorry to say Nintendo doesn't automatically update the system. I know the User Agreement says they have the right to but they have not done it yet. So someone had to update your system. A region changed system will get the #003 error when updated to 4.2 firmware.
A softmod is safe as long as you pay attention to what your doing (do not update unless you know for sure it is safe). It also has more options then a Hardmod.
If you have a Korean system I would stick with a Modchip. But allot of the newer Wii systems will not even play backup disc because of the new drive they use. In this case you will need to use a USB loader (Softmod) or Modchip that supports USB Loading (if there even is one).

Thanks a lot for your advice, but I'm still a few answers short. Anyway in response to what you said, my Wii is Australian, I bought it from EB Games as a pre-owned console, so I doubt it would have to new drive, but is there anyway of telling? You say that Nintendo don't automatically update the system, however that is how I got the Error 003 in the first place, but I've heard this can be avoided by turning off Wiiconnect24. True?
Also I have another problem that needs answering. On my old Wii, I had The Homebrew Channel, & Backup Launcher Gamma, & all of my original games launched, & had no updates, however now, When I launch my original games on my new Wii from the disc channel, the Wii system has to be updated to play the game. Why is it different on a original Wii? How do I stop the game updates? Would it work if I upgraded to 4.2 firmware as a original Wii then soft-mod it?
Thanks in Advance

Again Nintendo didn't automatically update your system. You or someone else had to do it. You can say all you want that it updated automatically but your wrong.
Update the system to 4.2 firmware and follow the 4.2 firmware guide in my sig.

Dude, you're comparing apples and oranges.
Modchip = play backups
homebrew channel = play homebrew
A better way to phrase your question would be
"Gamma Loader or Modchips"
The homebrew channel is just a launcher for unsigned code.

Okay Okay, granted, but all I want to do is play backups without getting Error 003 or rendering my Wii completely useless by other means. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

i have both wasabi dx modchip and neogamma7 softmod.the issue about what is best is simple MODCHIPPED wills with software version 4.2 either e (europe) or u(usa) will NOT now play out of region backups for now. if you have pal system you NEED pal backups, also modchipped wiis need a full image backup 4.37GB to work,NOT A SCRUBBED IMAGE THEY WILL NOT WORK with chipped wiis.alot of chips now are solderless, just a case of taking your wii apart and installing the chip between the motherboard and disc drive and away you go and some even read backup isos from the wii sd drive so no more burning errors.
also most chips come with brickblockers, stopping you from updating wii software out of region and bricking your wii.
with the softmod option via the homebrew channel ITS FREE BUT,you have to be careful to do it right and follow instructions to the book, otherwise you have a chance of bricking or semi-bricking your wii.
also there is alot of messing around with installing wads with new games that dont work,WAY,WAY OVER MY HEAD,but it works.also you can play scrubbed backups with softmod with the right mods done untill mr mario puts out a new wii software update out.also there is a small issue with mr mario knowing you are using a scrubbed backup that might in the future cause an issue.but also with softmod you have to be careful you DO NOT UPDATE YOUR WIII WITH OUT OF REGION SOFTWARE UPDATES from mr mario, this WILL brick your wii, although there are softwares to stop this from happening.
ITS A HEADACHE chipped=taking your wii apart, but safer once installed, but bigger FULL backup images needed 4.37GB,only plays your region backups with wii 4.2e/u for now, most chips are now solderless and can be updated with new firmware as and when needed, and some modchips play backups from sd cards.
softmod=FREE,but a risk of bricking your wii, need new wads installing now and again, play scrubbed backups and out of region.
thats it!!!

As I said before the reason you got the #003 error on your Korean system is cause you region changed it. Updating to 4.2 with this setup will give the #003 error.
Being you now have a PAL system you will not have to region change the system so you will not get the #003 error.
Update to 4.2 firmware and follow the 4.2 firmware guide in my sig.

Thanks a lot for all the info, guys, I will either get it modded, as hard mods aren't detectable by firmware updates, or I will install GeckoOS & Gamma Loader to play all my backups & originals without updating the wii menu. As long as I stay away from the online update menu, I should be okay.
Thanks
