Do most of the users on here use USB Loader with an external HD over using discs?

Considering going to USB Loader w/ external hard drive but curious as to what seems to be the norm these days.

Do what you want to do. Why should it matter what others do?

By the way I have both installed but mainly use USB loader.

All you need is an External HD, any size SD card, and a modded (I have wiikey v1) wii? Thats it for the USB Loader?

Wiikey has nothing to do with using a USB loader.

You need to softmod your system to use the USB loader.

I have a 4.1 FIRMWARE SOFTMOD GUIDE in my SIG.

Count me as a vote for USB! I can't see any reason to use the disc anymore. I love the USB loader.

Discs. I don't want to softmod.

So soft modding makes the wiikey obsolete (unless I play a backup disc)?

Also, are there different softmods/usb loaders out there? I see a bunch of different guides. All they all using the same software/mods?

Others will disagree, but IMHO, no. Softmodding is a "smarter mouse, better mousetrap" game.

I have had my Wiikey installed for a long time now and haven't had to do anything to my Wii other than upgrade to 1.9s when SSBB.

All I have to do is look at the number of posts on this forum about softmodding problems and udates and combinations and "can I take this update?" and other whatnot to convince me that I made the right decision to hardmod.

Also, DVDs are cheap. The amount that I spend on DVDs is less than the amount that I would pay for comparable external HDD space. (Even though I have several capable 1TB externals lying around the house and could go that route if I choose.

I have over 200 games, not spent 50 dollars on discs yet, how much was your USB drive and how many games you have on it?

For anyone who isn't computer literate then hardmodding is a must. I am quite literate and still prefer hard mod although mine is softmodded as well purely for the wad install and playing wiiware from SD.

It really depends on what a person wants from their wii and who actually is using it IMHO.

Agreed 100 percent, my only problem ever with the wii was when I was installing preloader and it required softmodding techniques.

This is exactly my point in my first post. It really doesn't matter what others think. You will get those that want it and those that do not. Make your own choice and stick with it. All this thread does is start a debate war over what is best Hardmod or Softmod.

Pro's and con's go both way really. I didn't spend a dime on my external HD cause I already had one. You can make a case either way. It's whats best for you. In my case I have 5 kids who love to leave discs lying around and don't want to take care not to scratch them so I was blowing through stacks of blank dvd's like crazy. Also when most games are too big for single layer games anymore how much money are you saving when buying stacks of DL media?

I could also make that argument that it takes much more effort and more time for you to swap between games than it does for me to return to the games list and simply point and click to play what I want.

It's a personal choice and every situation is different. I have both a wiikey and I use the USB Loader. I haven't played a game from the disc channel since going USB.

Besides, if you can't follow Larry's softmod guide but you can micro solder a chip on your dvd drive then you're an idiot and shouldn't be trying to do any mod.

Had a bunch of discs burnt before USB came onto scene. Continued to burn even though I exclusively use USB-GX. Can't beat the convenience and load speeds of USB. Also global 002 settings, video patches , Etc. have made Wii game loading much easier and more efficient.

some more pros are you don't have to worry about disc updates and playing out of region games is super easy

I just like the idea of having an archive of games stored in a small little box rather than having loads of game cases lying around the room. If you buy a 1 TB drive you can fit way more than the games that are actually worth playing for the wii.

BUT....if your HD fries then your up shit's creek. You don't have to worry about dvd's just not booting up one day. (As long as you take care of em)

HD's die when they want to.

I have placed the games onto the Ext HDD. test the games and make sure they work or worth keeping. Then burn them to a DVD-R for the collection. Why make DVD coasters?

Neither solution is 100%. I am troubleshooting a problem with SSBB where the HDD copy will consistent lock up in between a specific cutscene, yet my backup DVD doesn't.

I also have had DVD backups made from .isos that will not run from DVD but will run through the USB loader.

Having both covers pretty much all bases.

I have a small child in the house and must admit that the convenience of having all of the games in one small location is great.

As far as HDDs dying, ext. HDDs are so "cheap" that I can maintain 3 levels of backups.

1)backup WBFS drive
2)Backup .iso drives (2 sets)
3)LTO-3 tape backup of all .isos.

I have both, USB Loader & Neogamma. I use the USB Loader alot more than I use Neogamma. About the only games I use Neogamma for any more are Metal Slug Anthology and Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Using an external HDD ends up being cheaper & more convenient in the long run. I don't have to keep buying blank dvd's and don't end up with a bunch of discs lying around the house.

What problems are people having with USB loaders? I used to use usb loader gx and when I started having lots of problems I switched to configurable usb loader and haven't had a single problem with any games. I'm not saying that there aren't any problems, I just haven't seen any yet. So I'm curious, what specific games don't work on usb loader?

I have seen a problem where Video cutscenes will sometimes cause a DRE but this not verified to be directly associated with the USB loader.

I use the Configurable USB loader v.41

In this thread, larryjle posts a link to a list of known issues with games loaded via USB.

I switched to USB Loader on an external HDD I had laying around.

Before I was too lazy to get up and switch games so I would have games that I rarely played. I now play a ton more games without having to get up, open the entertainment cabinet, flip thru a burned dvd case and find a game, put it in, go back to the couch.

I have all the artwork loaded and its just like picking a game off the retail shelf and playing it.. all while on screen. I love how USB Loader GX makes it simple to download the cover art everytime I load a new game.

The best part about it is I NEVER have to worry about system updates as the USB Loader GX loads a game onto the hard drive and bypasses the update stuff completely.

At first I was moving the external HDD to the computer and loading the games onto it directly. But now that the HDD is pretty loaded up and I'm only getting a few games a week I've switched to burning the new games I get, then taking it to the USB Loader and letting it load it off the DVD.
The DVD is then given to my little cousin who has a mod chip'd Wii. He loves it getting new games all the time.

Everyone wins here.

I mainly use USBLoader GX. Using discs is my secondary option whenever a game is not compatible.
