It's probably a bad iso. Try getting it from somewhere else. Or maybe the disc is scratched.

The only difference is that if you update to 4.2 then you won't be able to play out of region games with just your modchip anymore and will need some homebrew assistance to get them started.
So I can just update off of wii connect 24 and nothing will happen? Or should I buy a retail copy and update off of that. I just dont want my wii to brick. I have a Wasabi DX chip with 4.0U firmware. PLZ RESPOND
No, don't do that. I have a hard modded wii running yaosm on 3.2U. The only thing I had to do was install the homebrew channel and then use it to run neogamma. You absolutely do not need to install any ios or cios for it to work if you are running if off the disc through neogamma. Neogamma will complain that you don't have ios249 installed or something, but it will work anyway. Btw, I am playing it with retail disc, but I'm sure backup will be the same since there is no protection on the disc.

Dont mess around with the above if u have a modchip..
Simply use a hex editor. Open up the ISO in the hex editor and change the first character from S to an R Save the ISO and burn. Your game will work fine.

I have 3.4u and a softmodded WII. I followed the instructions and installed the WAD listed in this post. When I insert SMG 2 (super mario galaxy 2) it still wants to install a system update. ????? Thanks in advance.

Hi all, I have a similar problem to some of the guys above - I have an NTSC Wii, hard modded to p[lay all regions as we live in England. We recently bought a PAL retail copy of Super mario galaxy 2 and let it do the update.
The all-region capability appears to have now been lost. Is there a way to fix this, given that I've already done the update from disk?
I also have a second problem - since I updated from a disk from a different region to the wii, I have got the setting menu error, where trying to enter Wii settings gives me an error screen saying there is a problem with Opera.
Any help would be much appreciated.

In answer to your first problem, modchips cannot be repaired to allow region-free functionality on 4.2 or 4.3 firmware...The only way to acheive region-free functionality on firmware 4.2 or 4.3 would be to softmod your wii to bypass the 4.2/4.3 region lock.
In answer to your second problem, a semi-brick is easily fixable, there are two ways that would suit your particular situation. You could either:
1) Softmod your wii & re-install your system menu & IOS. This option will leave you on 4.2 firmware.
OR
2) Update off a game containing a 4.3 system update (Metroid: Other M or Donkey Kong Country Returns) in NTSC-U. This will unbrick your semibrick and leave you on 4.3 firmware.

Great, thanks for the quick reply - I will probably try softmodding for both issues. I haven't done any before on the wii so will take a look for some guides.

I've hunted through some softmodding guides, and have been looking particularly at this one:
http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/60921-guide-softmod-any-wii.html
It's pretty active so I've asked the guys over there about my situation. One of them replied to me saying that there is no way to go region-free on a 4.2 wii, and that my only options would be to either downgrade to 4.1 (which i've seen advised against in various places) or to change the wii's region to PAL.
I'd prefer not to downgrade, and switching to PAL is also not ideal, as I have some NTSC games I would like to be able to play.
You mentioned bypassing the 4.2 region lock. I'm not worried about the modchip - I understand that won't work on 4.2 - but can I still make my wii region free through softmodding so as to play original NTSC and PAL games from the disk drive?
Sorry for the long post, I appreciate the help!

Yes, as I mentioned earlier in Post#33, softmodding is the only way to bypass the 4.2/4.3 region lock.
