I want to buy a black wii and I want to eventually mod it... so it needs to really be version 4.2 . Is there a way to tell what version of software a wii has prior to purchase... or is there a general place that I could look up what software versions various wii's might have?
Thanks!
(I found an old thread that mentioned that the black wii's came as 4.2 but that was back in June so I want to make sure I get a moddable wii before I go ahead and invest in one)

Being the newb that I am to Wii... how would i know whether it is NTSC or PAL and why would I need original disks for those specific games in those cases?
So having 4.3 makes no difference in terms of modding with an external hard drive?
Well, usually you can only get NTSC-U in America & PAL in Europe & Australia...You will need either NTSCSuper Smash Bros Brawl or LEGO Indiana Jones PAL, depending which region your console is. These games are needed because 4.3 (should your wii have it) has some new features to stop the standard way of loading Homebrew, so these games use hacked save file data to run homebrew.

Thanks again
no, 4.3 makes no difference as far as using a external hard drive. It does require the original disc already specified though. I just soft modded a wii with 4.3 using ssbb it was very simple and easy to do. I was actually expecting it to be a little harder.
