I have read and reread the softmod guide. I clearly do not understand it but it seems I have Forest Gumped my way into soft moding my wii. I can play backups.
my questions.
1.If I reset or start my wii with the SD card that I used to do the softmod in the wii, I just get a black screen. Is that normal?
2.If I wait long enough on that black screen, will bootmii 2 show up?
3. My home brew channel is completely empty if the sd card is not plugged in, but when I push the card in while I am on the HBC I see the options that I observed during install wii shop, wad, etc. Is that normal?
4. my dvd drive sounds like it is working harder when I play the back up games then if I play the original games, there is a lot of speed changes. Is that normal?
5. so far every game I have tried has worked. I have 3.4u firmware. Are there some games that need a higher firmware?
6. why do I want to upgrade to 4.1?
7. If I do upgrade to 4.1 do I need to follow this step in the guide"IOS60Patched:
IOS60Patched only needs to be installed if you have 4.0 or 4.1 firmware."
8. I do not think I have enough free blocks to upgrade to 4.0. what do I do?

1. This isn't normal. However, does Bootmii load when you remove the SD card? You might have an incompatible SD card.
2. No. Bootmii should load almost instantaneously. I remember helping you on another thread; boot delay needs to be edited on the bootmii Configuration Settings file. Apparently, you haven't done it.
3. This is normal. These apps you see on the HBC, when the SD card is plugged in, are the very same apps that you have in the apps folder in the SD card.
4. This is normal. When playing backups, discs are not read at the same rate as the original games. Some claim that they are read at about 50% speed. That explains the spluttering sound when a backup is inserted in the drive.
5. Certainly, there are games that require higher firmwares. However, if you are booting backups via backup launchers/USB loaders e.g. Neogamma, USB Loader Gx, WiiFlow et al firmware is irrelevant since you are using custom IOSs (cIOS38 a.k.a. IOS 249 & cIOS 223) to make them run.
6. First introduced in System Menu 4.0, when updating to 4.1 you would have the same added functionality of the SDHC card expansion of up to 32GB.
7. Yes. This is the IOS that is being used by System Menus 4.0 and 4.1. It is also believed to contain the SDHC feature. If you want to update, the first thing you need to do is to install IOS60 Patched, then use Waninkoko's Firmware Updater 4.1.
