So I softmoded my Wii the other day. Everything was going fine until like an idiot I updated the firmware. Now all I see is a black screen when I turn on the Wii.
My question is, would getting a modchip installed help with this issue? Would it allow me to rewrite the systems firmware though a custom start menu?

You need to supply more information like:

How did you update? Via disc or online?
What region is the console?
Did you have Bootmii or Priiloader installed?
Did you have any other Brick Protection installed?
Do you have a hacked save file on your wii?

Sutran, Sports Resort only contains a 3.4 update according to this page:
http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs...es-use-run.html

Therefore, It may be possible to use a game that has a 4.0 or 4.1 update to unbrick without needing a modchip.

1) Acquire an iso of the game you wish to update from.
2) Patch the iso to autoboot using this tool: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Wii_BootMe
3) Burn the iso to DVD-R well.
4) Activate Savemiifrii using a gamecube controller on your wii
5) Insert the disc & run the update

If this doesn't work, you can resort to these pages for extra help & tools:
