Hi ppl

I haven't used my wii for quite loong time now; my wii (w/ wiikey) is at fw 3.1E

I forgot the version of the wiikey but I beleive it was 1.9g? (dont know how can i check wiikey ver)

Is there some help/documents where can I update about what has been going on with the wiikey scenario? and how/what must I upgrade my f/w to inorder to play the latest backups?

It looks like there's also a softmod option? (from the topic titles)
pls any help much appriciated as I wish to start re-using my wii again

Honestly... not much. Modchips are pretty much dead. The wiikey did get an update when Smash bros brawl came out, to 1.9s. And I think there may have been another update after that to fix the compatability problem with new super mario bros wii but I'm not really sure.

You have a couple options at this point. Update the wiikey to the newest version, then update the wii either online or from game disk. A word of warning though: If you update it to firmware 4.3 then you won't be able to play import games anymore. But games and backups from your wii's region will still be fine.

The other option is what I did. Just forget about the wiikey. Update the wii then softmod. Once you're softmodded you can even play your games from a USB loader. No more burning disks, quicker load times and out-of-region imports will work even on the newest firmwares.

but is it safe to update the wii online? because its physically modded with a chip. Back then it used to brick itself or something

I had some probs running some games back then and imports never worked...so i'll prolly try this softmod thing, but will that disable my hardmod?

Online updating NEVER bricked wiis with modchips. The only danger from updating was if you tried to update from an out of region game disk. Do read up on softmod methods. If you update to 4.3 online then you'll need a copy of smash bros brawl to mod it. But since you have a modchip then it can be a backup.

If import games never worked for you then your wiikey probably had region override turned off. That was the default setting, and you had to use the config disk to activate it. If you softmod though then you won't have to bother with that, as the softmod will let you run import and backup games without any problems (it automatically blocks updates from the disk)

And softmods and modchips have no interaction with each other. They work in entirely different ways so they'll both still work.
