First of all, what firmware is the wii? Can it run gamecube games? If it can't, it means it used to be korean & if you update to 4.2 you will brick indefinitely without fixing, so in some cases, region-changing is dangerous, so just make sure yours didn't used to be korean.

Eh, well if you are familiar with an english wii, you'll know where the "wii options" button is on the wii menu. Once you click it, there are two options. Click the button with the spanner on it. When the next menu loads, it should say what firmware you are on in the top-right corner of your screen.

Also, if you can, check to see if your wii can boot gamecube games. Booting originals shouldn't be a problem, & if you have a modchip, backups shouldn't be a problem, but if it is softmodded only you'll want to install some mIOS.

Sorry if this gamecube game/ korean wii thing is bugging you, but I cannot tell you how important it is to make sure your wii wasn't korean. If you change the region on a korean wii & update it 4.2, you will brick with error 003, which is un-fixable. I found this out the hard way, so you'll want to take the same precaution.

Once you find out your firmware version, I can proceed to advise you on the right procedure for region change

Oh well, this makes it easier. Your wii must be modded with a modchip. You could try the language button in the settings menu, but I don't think english would be an option. The only choice failing that would be to completely softmod then change your regoin. It should be easy enough, all the software should be in english. OR you could run a homebrew game exploit to run Anyregionchanger, thus bypassing the softmodding completely. It's up to you. Your modchip shouldn't be affected unless you update to 4.2.

If you try the language button in the settings, it should look like this 言語, but I think you can only change to languages in your region japanese, chinese etc

What do you want to do?

I can't see that picture, but from your description I can tell it's a semi-brick. This is when your wii is updated from a game that isn't in your region. It could explain why your wii is in Japanese. Did you always have this error, & has your wii always been in Japanese?

This is easy to fix, & you can fix it by updating from a disc in your region, but we don't know for sure what your region is, because it's semi-bricked. My suggestion would be to run Smash Stack & use a syscheck to find out.

Hey man. Yeh from what I read I expected I had semi-bricked it.

Can you reccomend a jap game and a Korean game that will have the update I need?

I will try to find out what region mine is but I am unsure of the two program you mentioned. I am a total wii noob so I would appreciate any guidence you can give to help me find out my region.

Thanks again for ur time & help.

Ah, well this makes it harder. So this is what we need to do:

1. Unbrick your semi-brick (optional)
2. Run a game exploit to change your region if you do not want to softmod (This is easier, although I've never done that without softmodding, but it should work).

If you want to unbrick your wii first, tell me & I'll give you instrcutions, but for now, whats the newest game you can play?

If you want to go straight to the region-changing, the semi-brick shouldn't affect it.

But first, run a syscheck so we can tell what your firmware is.

Instructions: Note your wii cannot have any custom brawl stages on it's memory.

1. Obtain a backup or original disc of Super Smash Bros Brawl in NTSC-U (American version)
2. Download this: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/SysCheck
3. Download this: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Smash_Stack
4. Delete or Move any existing custom stages on Brawl to your SD card and exit the stage builder. Smash Stack will not work if the console has any custom stages on it, even the three samples that come with a new file.
5. Connect the SD card to your computer and rename the "private" folder to "privateold" in a folder called "ROOT"on the SD card.
6. Copy the "private" folder from the Smash Stack download to the root of the SD card.
7. Take the syscheck.elf file and put that in the root of the SD card.
8. Insert the SD card into the Wii.
9. Go to the stage builder and the .elf file will load.
10. Your SD card will now have a report on it. Go to your computer, & copy the report here on the forum.

I've never done this myself, & I accept no responsibility if anything goes wrong (it shouldn't anyway).

I know this is getting complicated but it will help us alot.
