Just bought a Wii for my mom and will have it soft modded.
I just have some basic questions I couldn't find a reliable answer to.

-Is there any change (like on the Xbox360) the Wii will be banned from going online?
For instance if I download a game instead of making a direct back up.

-Do I have complete control on what softmod or other software the Wii runs?
I mean can I switch softmods, return to original software, remove an update, stuff like that.

Some bonus questions I'm putting in here to just for the heck of it.

-USB loader?
Does this mean I don't need DVD's anymore but can run from Hard drive.

-My friend who is going to softmod the Wii says I need a SD card. Is this true?

Here are the answers to your questions:

Q1: No. You can still play online.

Q2: Yes. Some things are more difficult than others, but the things you mentioned are possible.

Q3. Yes. USB means you can play off a usb stick or hard drive, you no longer need DVDs. You can even install games as channels so you can access them from the home menu.

Q4. Yes. All wii software that is needed for any softmodding is accessed from a sd card.

12137 is correct on the answer of this question, but I just wanted to add that once you've installed the softmod you can have it load homebrew files from the USB device instead. You don't need to leave the SD card inserted forever anymore, though most people still do just for the sake of simplicity.

By USB device you mean a hard drive or USB stick right?
What if you turn on the Wii without the device inserted?

And thanks people :)

If you boot the wii without any device inside it will be okay, but you must insert a usb or sd card to load any homebrew.

Don't really understand but for now I'm working with DVD-r's anyway.

Another question:)
My Wii says it's version 4.1E.
It hasn't been online yet, but does this mean it has the 4.1 update?
And if I don't install 4.2 and 4.3 updates can I still play games online?

Yes, your wii has been updated to 4.1 & it is currently on 4.1. If you updated to 4.2 or 4.3, your wii would still be able to go online, however 4.2 & 4.3 updates erase all softmods, & 4.3 currently gives errors when loading softmod files & cannot be softmodded at this point in time. 4.2 is able to be softmodded, however it you have to do it all over again. And since 4.2 & 4.3 are both useless in terms of gameplay, you really don't need to update, updating sometimes creates more trouble than it's worth, especially someone like yourself who is new to this concept. Do not update unless you think you really should, & don't update to 4.3 if you still want to play backups.

If you write the things you do not understand, I'll be happy to try & explain them to you.

Having big problems with softmodding, keep getting read disk error 972 or 1101. :(
If this continues I'd have to run off an USB stick instead.
Does the USB stick have to be empty (besides the games) and FAT32?

Don't think so.

The friend who was helping me also updated my Wii to 4.3.
He wanted to get 4.2 and didn't realize 4.3 was out...

Errors 972 and 1101 are generic disk read errors. They could mean bad burns or crappy media, or they could mean that the wii cannot read burned disks. If the wii is a newer model then it likely cannot read burned DVDs no matter what you do and you will have to use a USB loader.

And you cant downgrade the firmware from 4.3. Nor should you even if you could. Many newer wii models will be bricked if you attempt to downgrade.

Someone has posted a method to reinstall a softmod to an updated wii here but it requires the wii to already have been properly softmodded before updating, and I'm not sure if you managed to do that.

If that doesn't work, then you'll just have to wait until 4.3 is fully hacked. It doesn't usually take very long, probably a couple weeks.

Don't get any ideas & think you can hack 4.3 by yourself, wait for the professionals to figure it out, 4.3 is really pulling out the stops to stop hackers, just read this:

If your wii was softmodded before you updated to 4.3 then there is still hope according to wiihack
Quote:
Do NOT update to 4.3

This is for all the silly people who installed 4.3.
Your wii must have been softmodded prior to 4.3 (atm)
This will only work if you had cios installed prior (atm)
IOS, 202, 222/223, 236, 250, any cIOSCORP/DARKCORP
You'll need a copy of Lego Indiana Jones

Other methods: Covered at the end, briefly
SSBB NTSC
Boot2 Bootmii
Forwaders/channel installs
cIOSCORP disk swap

Download 4.3 down.zip
Extract to sd:\

Play Lego Indiana Jones retail game
Complete lvl 1, make a save file, exit
Goto settings, data management, save games, wii
Delete Lego Indiana Jones Save Game
Goto SD, copy Indiana PWNS hack for your region
Load Lego Indiana Jones
When the game loads, you will be in Barnett College. Walk to the Art Room (through the Courtyard), approach the left character on the podium. When it zooms on him, choose the switch to option (two silhouettes, staggered, with an arrow pointing between them).
Buffer Overflow starts, loadmii loads

Load from SD
Launch Dop-Mii.dol
Select IOS250- Press A (if fail try ios 202, 222, 223, 236, any cORP ios)
Select ios, mios, bc, press A
Install IOS60-64-v6174 with all patches
Install IOS34-64-v3348 without patches
Install from NUS if online
From SD if offline- place all needed wads in sd:\wad
IOS60-64-v6174.zip IOS34-64-v3348.zip
Press B to back out the main menu

Select System Menu, press A
Select System Menu 4.1 (u, e, j, k) for your region
Install from NUS if online, or offline from SD- place all needed wads in sd:\wad
4.1u-System Menu-NUS-v449.zip = NTSC-U USA
4.1e-System Menu-NUS-v450.zip = PAL Euro
4.1j-System Menu-NUS-v448.zip= NTSC-J JAPAN
4.1k-System Menu-NUS-v454.zip = NTSC-K KOREA
Install System Menu 4.1
Exit

Install HBC, DVDx, and Bootmii
Format SD-CARD
3.0-4.1 wiis- download Hackmii_1.6_BB1.zip, *alt-B, C, D, E*
4.0-4.2 wiis- download Hackmii_1.6_BB2.zip, *alt-B, C*
Extract file to sd:\
3.0-4.1- goto wii settings- data managment- channels- SD- Load the boot.dol
4.0-4.2- goto the SD-ICON from the wii channel menu- load the boot.dol
Hackmii Installer loads
(if this fails to load, extract an alt BB file *A, B, C, ...* to sd:\ Try Try Try) again
Install HBC
Install DVDx
Install Bootmii as both boot2 and IOS (boot2 may not be available)
Prepare the SD-card
Exit

Reinstall Waninkoko's cIOS38-r17
Extract CB2_BB2_Cios38-r17-installer.zip to sd:\
Load the HBC, run cios installer
Select ios250 (or other cios), install
Install from WAD or Network

Install Priiloader
Extract Priiloader_0.4_BB2.zip to sd:\
hacks.ini.zip to sd:\
Load HBC, launch Priiloader Installer
Read the warning- Hold B press +/A to install
Reboot wii, priiloader should load
Hold reset and boot wii to load priiloader if needed
Select Hacks- Press A
Enable "Block Disk Updates", and "Block Online Updates", others if you like
If you don't know what the hack does- you don't need it.
Your wii should now block Disk update and online update.
Outdated Channels will ask for updates
NEVER UPDATE YOUR WII FROM NINTENDO AGAIN-
read the forum and do it yourself

Note: Prilloader installer gives two errors-

*This is not an issue, and is expected*

Optional priiloader settings-
Autoboot to HBC- Click settings, set auto-boot and return to HBC. Your wii now boots to HBC.
Autoboot to USBloader-GX- click load/install, install usbloader-gx.dol, goto settings, set autoboot/return to installed file. Your boots into usbloader-gx. This is great for kids.
You can auto-boot to any app you like.

Other methods to load APPS

4.2 wiis who had boot2 bootmii
Format sd card
Extract Dop-Mii_v12_CB2_BB2.zip to sd:\
Boot the wii, dop-mii loads
Do the above

Wiis with forwarders installed,
If you installed a forwarder to usbloader, mplayer, etc
Extract the dop-mii boot.dol into the sd:\apps\application folder
Replace the boot.dol of your forwarder app with that of dop-mii
Now your forwarder should load dop-mii, do the above.

Usbloader GX, channel
Load Dop-Mii, do the above

cIOSCORP/DARKCORP disk swap
Take any retail game you have, the game must reset to the health screen to work.
Make/acquire an iso of that game
Use wiiscrubber to replace the main.dol of the game with the boot.dol of dop-mii
Burn the disk
Load retail disk from disk channel
Once game loads, remove disk and replace with your burned mod disk
Push home, reset the game
Dop-mii should start, do the above.

972 and 1101 is exactly what my Wii was getting for errors before 4.3.
I thought only the black Wii's could not read burned DVD's, I bought a white one for that reason.
Neogamma is suited to load games from USB right?
What version should I take?

Edit
Well, we attempted to softmod it but I got error 972 or 1101.
So we erased the Wii memory, I ques it won't work for my Wii to revert back to an earlier update?

No, you cannot downgrade a 4.3, if that's what your getting at. It's not safe.
