I just purchased a Wii and I am looking at getting a mod chip and maybe trying to connect up a USB drive as well. I have modded a couple of other game consoles but this is my first Nintendo unit. The purpose of my modding is to essentially save the original discs from getting damaged. It I can burn a backup or load it from a USB drive I would be happy.

I believe that I have the mod chip portion understood but the USB drive seems a little more complicated. Please tell me if I am understanding this correctly. A mod chip allows you to use games from back-up DVD-Rs. However, in order to use the USB drive you need to do a software mod. Is this true? If they are both the mod chip and software mod installed do they conflict with each other?

If I were you I would just softmod the wii altogether. This way, you can play backups & save $50-$100 by not buying the modchip. To use a USB Hard-Drive, you would need to install USB Loader, which will let you rip games to the USB stick if that's what you're after.

To install USB loader, you would need to install the Homebrew Channel. If you do that, you're really just wasting your money on a modchip.

Okay, I can honestly say that I jumped the gun and purchased a Mod chip and installed it. Maybe I jumped the gun. Not really sure. It could be my misinterpretation on how to proceed.

So, that being installed and running I guess the next step is to install the Homebrew Channel and then get the USB loader working.

I really hope that I have not painted myself into a corner here.

If you already installed a modchip then you don't need to install homebrew channel or a USB loader. Just burn a disk and pop it in the wii.
