Is there a way to set some setting in the homebrew channel or somewhere else to prevent small children from running a system update if it were to pop up? I've tried searching this but maybe I 'm just not phrasing it correctly. thanks

Get Priiloader . There is a option to stop system updates via disc and online .

Install Priiloader & enable the "Block Disc & Online Updates" hack. Or if you wanted to you could remove the update from the disc using wiiscrubber, but that's very complicated, just stick with Priiloader.
